ALICE ALCD 020 [49 mins] [PGW]

A stimulating collection of early to 20th C. music, all meticulously presented and packaged with imagination, from the Swedish company ALICE. Albert de Rippe, an innovative composer who avoided publication to thwart imitators, was court lutenist in Mantua and his travels took him to England and the court of Henry VIII. The maverick Swedish composer Claude Loyola Allgén (1920-1990) never fitted into the Swedish establishment and was subject to 'malignant slander bordering on persecution'. And between those, some delectable CDs by the vocal and instrumental trio Akantus; my favourite I'vo piangendo, a programme of dolorous music from 17th Century Italy. Explore and enjoy!

AMERICAN SPIRITUALS : NEW PIANO WORKS Jeff NICHOLLS: Chelsea Square (1999) Jason ECKARDT: Echoes' White Veil (1996) Michael FINNISSY: North American Spirituals (1998) Milton BABBITT: Allegro Penseroso (1999) Marilyn Nonken (piano) Recorded 1997 (Eckhardt) and 2000 CRI CD 877 [57:32] [HC]

This release provides a superb anthology of recent, difficult piano works. Nonken plays all these pieces with remarkable technical assurance and fine musicianship.

DORIAN DOR-90224 DDD [73.00] [RB]

A very strong selection. One to be commended for its unhackneyed choices. A delight to come across such a collection devoid of Gershwin and Bernstein.

Not a disc to listen to all the way through in one sitting perhaps, but I have enjoyed dipping into it regularly since it came my way.

CAPTAIN COOK'S CELLO  Carl Vine Inner World (1994) for cello and pre-recorded CD Peter Sculthorpe Threnody (1992) Requiem (1979) John Keane ConFusion (2000) for multi-tracked cello and voice Colin Matthews Palinode (1992)  Ian Blake Verklärter Bungalow (2000) for multi-tracked cello and voice Lowri Blake (cello and voice) Lowri Records LOWRI 2003 [60 mins]  [PGW]

- - - a musician of the new century, blurring the distinction between 'classical' and other genres, and releasing a growing discography of discerning repertoire. In this collection of new music from England and Australia, Carl Vine's Inner World with pre-recorded CD is particularly striking, surrounding the live cello with electronically transformed cello sounds - -

All in all, a very well produced, entertaining recording, however I do feel that novelty is an over-riding factor with this type of disc.

Good Order ! Ladies and Gentlemen please:Traditional singing & music from 'The Eel's Foot', Eastbridge, Suffolk recorded in the 1930s & 40s. VT140CD

'Order, Please !' For anybody interested in the roots of the folk-song tradition from which many an orchestral rhapsody sprang, this is a CD well worth investigating.

HEIFETZ CENTENARY MEMORIAL EDITION Naxos 8.107001 - Set of 7 individual CDs in a cardboard presentation case [PSe]

Sounding, as you have every right to expect, exactly like much-loved, very well cared for, and rarely played 78s, this set is a treasure-house for both serious students of the art of violin-playing and those simply seeking something to rekindle their sense of wonder.
