Edith CANAT de CHIZY (b. 1950) Times, La Ligne d’ombre, Yell, Alio, Omen BBC SO/Kazuki Yamada; Poitou-Charentes O, Besançon Montbéliard Franche-Comté O/Peter Csaba; Nouvel PO/Michiyosji Inouë; France Ntl O/Alain Altinoglu rec. 2002-9 AEON AECD 1105 [66:33] [HC]

This well-filled disc may be recommended as a fair introduction to Edith Canat de Chizy’s highly personal and sincere music-making.

Frideric CHOPIN (1810-1849) Preludes, Nocturnes, Waltzes Jean-Yves Thibaudet (piano) rec. 1981/7 DAL SEGNO DSPRCD060 [73:59] [MB]

Chopin devotees won’t want to miss this one.

Frédéric CHOPIN (1810-1849) Complete Waltzes Stephen Hough (piano) rec. 2010 HYPERION CDA67849 [60:22] [DC]

Best in currency.

Fryderyk CHOPIN (1810-1849) Les Sylphides see ADAM

Fryderyk CHOPIN (1810-1849) Piano Concerto 2 see STRAVINSKY

Francesco CILEA (1866 - 1950) Adriana Lecouvreur Micaela Carosi (soprano) Marcelo Álvarez (tenor) Ch & O Teatro Regio Torino/Renato Palumbo rec. live, 2009 DYNAMIC CDS 628/1-2 [75:23 + 66:21] [GF]

Deserves to be heard for Alvarez but the Levine is more melodious and fascinating.

Aaron COPLAND (1900-1990) Quiet City Robert ALDRIDGE (b.1954) Sound Moves Blues Walter S. HARTLEY (b.1927) Lyric Suite Lawson LUNDE (b.1935) Sonata Seymour BARAB (b.1921) Suite Christopher Brellochs (saxophone) Paul Cohen (saxophone) Donald Batchelder (trumpet) Mitchell Kriegel (clarinet and bass clarinet) Richard Clarke (viola) Lois Anderson (piano) Allison Brewster Franzetti (piano) rec. 2005/10 DORIAN SONO LUMINUS DSL-92135 [58:38] [JW]

Great tunes, bluesy excursions and limpid romanticism.

Leonid DESYATNIKOV (b.1955) Return, Du côté de chez Swan, Variations on the Obtaining of a Dwelling, Wie der Alte Leiermann, The Leaden Echo Alexei Goribol (piano) Anton Dressler (clarinet) Anna Panina (violin) Fedor Lednev (conductor) rec. 1995-2010 QUARTZ MUSIC QTZ 2087 [65:24] [GD]

The music stays with you in an unsettling way, and even after repeated listenings it is impossible to tell why.

Erno DOHNÁNYI (1877-1960) Variations on a Nursery Tune Sergei RACHMANINOV (1873-1843) Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini Julius Katchen (piano) London PO/Adrian Boult rec. 1959 PRISTINE AUDIO PASC266 [45:49] [OL]

Fun and finery in Dohnányi, "fast and furious" Rachmaninov.

Gaetano DONIZETTI (1797 - 1848) Don Pasquale John Del Carlo (bass) Matthew Polenzani (tenor) Anna Netrebko (soprano) Ch & O Metropolitan Operas/James Levine rec. live 2010 DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON 073 4635 [133:00] [RMK]

A Metropolitan Opera romp. Great fun.

David DUBERY (b.1948) Songs and Chamber music Adrienne Murray (mezzo), John Turner (recorder), Peter Dixon (cello), Richard Simpson (oboe), Graham Salvage (bassoon), Craig Ogden (guitar), Richard Williamson (viola), David Dubery (piano), Paul Jones (piano)
rec.2008/9 METIER MSV28523 [78:47] [JF]

A great retrospective CD of Dubery’s music - in a traditional approachable language that is sometimes demanding.

Lucien DUROSOIR (1878-1955) Le Balcon, Idylle, Piano Trio, Trilogie Ensemble Sequenza 9.3; Diotima Qt, Aquilon Qnt, Trio Hoboken rec. 2005/10 ALPHA 175 [79:46] [Byz]

Alpha continue their almost single-handed, entirely justified attempt to bring Durosoir’s brilliant music to long overdue public attention.

Antonín DVORÁK (1841-1904) Symphonic Variations, Symphony 8 London PO/Sir Charles Mackerras rec. 1992 LONDON PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA LPO 0055 [60:19] [BR]

There are now three live recordings of Mackerras leading this symphony. Choose yours by the coupling - or Supraphon’s winning sound.

Antonín DVORÁK (1841-1904) Symphonies 8 & 9 see Giulini in America

Antonin DVOŘÁK (1841-1904) Serenade see Romantic Wind Serenades

Tim EWERS (b.1958) Flautando, Rainy Days and Holidays, Following on see POULENC

Antoine de FEVIN (1470-1512) Requiem d'Anne de Bretagne and works by Moulu, Desprez, Festa, Hellinck & de la Rue Yann-Fanch Kemener (voice) Doulce Memoire/Denis Raisin Dadre rec. 2010 ZIG-ZAG TERRITOIRES ZZT110501 [70.65] [RH]

Beautifully illuminates sacred Breton music of the period.

César FRANCK (1822-1890) Pièce héroïque see LISZT

BARGAIN OF THE MONTH Gabriela Lena FRANK (b. 1972) Hilos, Danza de los Saqsampillos, Adagio para Amantaní, Quijotadas Gabriela Lena Frank (piano) ALIAS Chamber Ens rec. 2010 NAXOS 8.559645 [66:41] [BR]

Extremely well-crafted music that’s a great pleasure to hear. Peruvian folk rhythms, but don’t pigeonhole this as “ethnic”.

Robert FUCHS (1847-1927) Serenades 1 & 2, Andante grazioso and Capriccio Cologne CO/Christian Ludwig rec. 2008/9 NAXOS 8.572222 [53:23] [DM]

A most enjoyable selection, winningly played and well worth exploring.

Carlo GESUALDO DA VENOSA (1566-1613) Madrigals Book 3 Delitiæ Musicæ/Marco Longhini rec. 2008 NAXOS 8.572136 [68:37] [RMo]

This series clearly marks a highpoint in the Naxos Early Music catalogue.

Christoph Willibald GLUCK (1714-1787) Symphonies L'Orfeo Baroque O/Michi Gaigg rec. 2007 CPO 777 411-2 [57:18] [Byz]

Refined and restrained, with attention to detail, yet still light and bright. Period instruments and techniques are used to authentic effect.

Gareth GLYN (b. 1951) Welsh Incident Noson yn yr opera, Welsh Incident, Dinas Barhaus, Cariad, Conseirto i’r Utgorn, Gwylmabsant, Llam Carw, Cyfres Fechan i Linynnau Jonathan Pryce (narrator) Philippe Schartz (trumpet) Dominic Seldis (double-bass) Jane Watts (organ) BBC NOW/Grant Llewellyn Royal Ballet Sinf/Gavin Sutherland/Julian Bigg rec. 2008-2010 SAIN SCD2653 [54:56 + 46:08] [JF]

Gareth Glyn is one of the best composers around and I guess that he deserves a greater popularity.

Carl GOLDMARK (1830-1915) Rustic Wedding Symphony, Merlin Prelude Philharmonie Festiva/Gerd Schaller rec. 2008/2009 HÄNSSLER PROFIL PH10048 [54:38] [PK]

A composer and symphony too long neglected. Buy this recording for a pleasant experience.

Charles GOUNOD (1818 - 1893) Faust Jerry Hadley (tenor) Samuel Ramey (bass) Cecilia Gasdia (soprano) Welsh National Opera Ch & O/Carlo Rizzi rec. 1993 WARNER CLASSICS 2564 67691-5 [3 CDs: 212:00] [GF]

This Rizzi set, at super budget price, trumps its competitors in many ways, not least the singing of Hadley and Gasdia.

Alessandro GRANDI (1586 - 1630) Vespro della Beata Vergine Deborah York (soprano); Daniel Taylor (alto); Ed Lyon (tenor); Peter Harvey (bass) Gachinger-Kantorei Stuttgart, Bach-Collegium Stuttgart/Matthew Halls rec. live, 2010 CARUS 83.367 [57.50] [RH]

This disc charmed me far more than I could have imagined.

Edvard GRIEG (1843-1907) Symphonic Dances; Norwegian Dances; Lyric Suite, Elegiac Melodies Danish RSO/Erik Tuxen rec. 1952-54 FORGOTTEN RECORDS FR 469 [69:52] [JW]

Tuxen and Grieg could hardly be bettered at the time in this repertoire.

Pelle GUDMUNDSEN-HOLMGREEN (b. 1932) The natural world of - Choral works Ars Nova Copenhagen/Paul Hillier rec. 2008-10 DACAPO 6.220583 [70:57] [DM]

If you’re after something different, don’t hesitate.

Wilhelm Emilius HARTMANN (1836-1898) Serenade see Romantic Wind Serenades

Franz Joseph HAYDN (1732-1809) Piano Sonatas - Vol 2 Jean-Efflam Bavouzet (piano) rec. 2009/2010 CHANDOS CHAN10668 [68:29] [CH]

Maybe two successes, one failure and two in between is the best that can be expected of five Haydn sonatas from one artist.

Joseph HAYDN (1732-1809) Symphony 6 see BACH

Arwel HUGHES (1909–1988) Prelude for orchestra; Owain Glyndwr; Serch yw’r Doctor Overture; Suite for Orchestra; Anatiomaros; Menna, prelude to the opera Royal PO/Owain Arwel Hughes rec. 2009 BIS BIS-CD-1674 [74:22] [RB]

The vibrant vein of twentieth century pastoral romance.

Johann Nepomuk HUMMEL (1778-1837) Piano Sonata No.3 in F minor, Op.20 (c.1807) [17:04] Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART (1756-1791) Fantasy in C minor, K.475 (1785) [9:28] Piano Sonata in F major, K.332 (1783) [14:42] Johann Nepomuk HUMMEL Fantasy after Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, Op.124 [5:48] Felix MENDELSSOHN-BARTHOLDY (1809-1847) Andante with Variations, Op.82 (1841) [8:52] Daria Gloukhova (piano) rec. 2009, CENTAUR CRC3080 [55:54] [OL]

The pianist seems to be in too much hurry, over-personalizing and over-dramatizing the music.

George Frideric HANDEL (1685-1759) Serse Paula Rasmussen (mezzo) Ann Hallenberg (mezzo) Patricia Bardon (mezzo) Isabel Bayrakdarian (soprano) Les Talens Lyriques/Christophe Rousset rec. 2000 EUROARTS 2053798 [156:00] [KM]

A fine recording of a great Handel opera, with mezzo Paula Rasmussen stealing the show.

Joseph HAYDN (1732-1809) Symphonies 49, 103 & 104 London Mozart Players/Harry Blech rec. 1952/5 FORGOTTEN RECORDS FR239 [78:17] [MG]

Blech conveys so well the feeling behind the classical restraint.

Joseph HAYDN (1732-1809) String Quartets Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART (1756-1791) String Quartet Quartetto Italiano rec. 1948/52 PRISTINE AUDIO PACM077 [50:55] [JW]

A delightful souvenir of the quartet at its most youthful and freshest.

Joseph HAYDN (1732-1809) Songs Lisa Milne (soprano) Bernarda Fink (mezzo) John Mark Ainsley (tenor) Roger Vignoles (piano) rec. 1999/2001 HYPERION HELIOS CDH55355 [75:38] [OL]

Ornate elegance tinted with pink and orange.

Philip G.W. HENDERSON (b. 1948) The Magic Wood, for ten solo strings, The Hop-picker’s Daughter, for string quartet Philip Henderson Ens/Philip Henderson rec. 2010/2011 PRIVATE CD [36:53] [JW]

Something filmic and immediately appealing about this music.

Heinz HOLLIGER (b.1939) Toronto-Exercises, Puneigä, Induuchlen, Ma'mounia Anna Maria Bacher, Albert Streich (recitation) Sylvia Nopper (soprano) Kai Wessel (counter-tenor) Olivier Darbellay (horn) Matthias Würsch; Swiss Chamber Soloists/Heinz Holliger rec. 1958-2010 ECM NEW SERIES 2201 (476 3977) [68:08] [MS]

If you're new to Holliger's extraordinary and challenging sound world these recent works for voices and small ensemble make a creditable and compelling introduction.

RECORDING OF THE MONTH Herbert HOWELLS (1892-1983) The Winchester Service Simon Bell (organ) Winchester Cathedral Ch/Andrew Lumsden rec. 2010 HYPERION CDA67853 [68:30] [WH]

A superb, unmissable recital of Howells’ later choral and organ works.

Lydia KAKABADSE (b.1955) The Mermaid, Russian Tableaux, Arabian Rhapsody Suite, The Phantom Listeners Kit Hesketh-Harvey (narrator) Clare McCaldin (mezzo) Emma Brain-Gabbott (soprano) Michael Bundy (baritone) ad hoc quartet George Vass (conductor) rec. 2010 NAXOS 8.572524 [75:12] [Byz]

A delightful CD that will please. It deserves a wide audience.

Zoltán KODÁLY (1882-1967) Háry János Suite, Dance of Galánta, Variations on a Hungarian Folksong Hungarian State SO/Ádám Fischer rec. 1990 NIMBUS NI7081 [71:19] [OL]

These are good performances, a bit on the slow side, but not the best available, chiefly because of the acoustic decisions.

Shirish KORDE (b.1945) Nada-Ananda Nigel OSBORNE (b. 1948) The Birth of Naciketas Nava Rasa Ens rec. 2009 SLAP THE MOON RECORDS STMRCD01 [39.55] [EM]

On the short side but a rather special disc the merits of which include absolutely beautiful presentation.

Ernst KRENEK (1900-1991) Symphony 4, Concerto Grosso 2 Volker Worlitzsch (violin), Dimitar Penkov (viola), Nikolai Schneider (cello) NDR Radiophil/Alun Francis rec. 2006 CPO 777 210 2 [57:24] [RB]

Real enchantment is attained. Very impressive indeed.

BARGAIN OF THE MONTH  Franz LISZT (1811-1886) A Symphony to Dante’s ‘Divine Comedy’, Après une lecture de Dante Berlin PO/Daniel Barenboim (piano) rec. 1985/92 WARNER CLASSICS APEX 2564 673012 [66:33] [IL]

A welcome reissue of a very exciting reading: Liszt at full diabolical throttle.

Franz LISZT (1811-1886) Fantasie and Fugue Max REGER (1873-1916) Fantasia César FRANCK (1822-1890) Pièce héroïque Camille SAINT-SAËNS (1835-1921) Danse macabre Raúl Prieto Ramírez (organ) rec. 2008 BRILLIANT CLASSICS 94174 [72:59] [DM]

The Liszt is a stunner. Pity it wasn’t matched with more suitable repertoire.

Franz LISZT (1811-1886) Etude 6 after Paganini see BRAHMS

Alonso LOBO (1555-1617) Lamentations see VICTORIA
