Monologues and Dialogues Peter Sheridan (flutes), with Lisa Maree Amos (flute) Jane Hammond (piano) MOVE RECORDS MD 3349 [77:05] [DC]

A great achievement, and a very nice programme.

A Musical Journey - The Museo Vela at Lignornetto, Switzerland Music by Chopin Irina Zaritzkaya (piano) NAXOS 2.110538 [58.35] [RJF]

A little of the diverse nature of Switzerland’s cultural background and physical location comes through in these pictures of a unique collection of the artistic works of the Vela family.

RECORDING OF THE MONTH Of Another Time Yun Kyong Kim (organ) rec. 2009 MSR CLASSICS MS1362 [70:14] [JS]

A programme lovingly compiled and played, excellently recorded.

Organ and Piano Duets Works by Langlais, Saint-Saëns, Widor, Lutoslawski, Bedard, Cervelló & Dupré Dúo MusArt-Barcelona BRILLIANT CLASSICS 9213 [60:55] [SA]

I shall certainly be listening to this disc much more often than I could ever have imagined. I urge you to try it.

Organ Duets Works by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Langlais, Tomkins, Carleton, Johnstone & Leighton Charles Harrison and David Leigh (organ) rec. 2010 GUILD GMCD 7368 [68:01] [JS]

All in all this is a fascinating issue with good playing and recording of what is for the most part rare and welcome repertoire.

Organ music by Pärt, Rautavaara, Gubaidulina & Górecki Kevin Bowyer (organ) rec. 1999 NIMBUS NI 5675 [78:43] [Byz]

Bowyer gives yet more virtually irreproachable performances.

Oscar’s Orchestra - Vols 1 & 2 Dudley Moore, Murray Melvin, David de Keyser WARNER CLASSICS 2564 677896/7 [4 DVDs: ca 591:00] [DC]

Fun, and subliminally educational.

Pasajes Ensemble Intégrales rec. 2009, NEOS 11047 [67.47] [GH]

Commitment, expressive abilities and virtuosity. These composers are fortunate indeed to have these musicians working for them with such flair.

Sergey Rachmaninov: Solo Piano Recordings - Vol. 2 rec. 1925-1942 NAXOS 8.112058 [74:53] [SA]

This is a disc to cherish and is a truly glorious experience.

Romantic Wind Serenades Antonin DVOŘÁK (1841-1904) Serenade Felix MENDELSSOHN-BARTHOLDY (1809-1847) Overture Wilhelm Emilius HARTMANN (1836-1898) Serenade Consortium Classicum rec. 1991/2 MUSIKPRODUKTION DABRINGHAUS UND GRIMM MDG3010416-2 [53:17] [JS]

A programme of thoroughly enjoyable music.

Russian Songs Songs by Mussorgsky, Cui, Rimsky-Korsakov, Balakirev & Borodin Mikhail Svetlov (bass) Pavlina Dokovska (piano) rec. 2009 NAXOS 8.572218 [56:37] [OL]

Svetlov brings his opera experience into the songs, which is especially beneficial for Mussorgsky.

The Shadow Side Contemporary song from Scotland Irene Drummond (soprano) Iain Burnside (piano) rec. 2010 DELPHIAN DCD34099 [69:04] [Byz]

These recordings of MacMillan, McGuire, Mealor and Bingham are certainly worth having but the rest are missable.

Mordecai Shehori: The Celebrated New York Concerts - Vol. 5 Works by Weber, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Liszt & Schumann Mordecai Shehori (piano) rec. 1976/84 CEMBAL D’AMOUR CD158 [70:57] [JW]

Showy pomp, graphically narrative playing, enriching and impressively argued.

Vladimir Sofronitsky plays at the Scriabin Museum Volume 7: Works by Prokofiev & Shostakovich Vladimir Sofronitsky (piano) rec. 1955/7 VISTA VERA VVCD-00225 [64:27] [JW]

You’ll need to be a seriously hard core collector to put up with this one.

RECORDING OF THE MONTH Sonatas and Scenes Danish Works for solo cello by Nørgård, Fundal, Brødsgaard, Nielsen & Helweg John Ehde (cello) rec. 2009/10 CDKLASSISK CDK1061 [61:09] [Byz]

Brilliance of technique, sureness of tone and depth of expression.

Songs without words Adam Woolf (sackbut) Nicholas Milne (viola da gamba) Eligio Luis Quinteiro (theorbo) Siobhán Armstrong (harp) Kathryn Cok (harpsichord, organ) rec. 2009, SFZMUSIC LC-18271 [60:30] [JV]

The technical prowess of Adam Woolf and his colleagues is impressive indeed.

RECORDING OF THE MONTH That’s Entertainment - A Celebration of the MGM Film Musical Kim Criswell, Matthew Ford, Seth MacFarlane, Curtis Stigers, Maida Vale Singers, The John Wilson O/John Wilson rec. 2011 EMI CLASSICS 028 8452 [77:20]  [IL]

Fans of those spectacular MGM musicals shouldn’t hesitate.

To the Point Works by Higdon, Rudin, Schuller, Cascarino & Reise Diane Monroe (violin) Dorothy Freeman (English Horn) Orchestra 2001/James Freeman rec. 2002-8 INNOVA 745 [73:40] [DC]

A fascinating and varied programme of highly approachable new music.

The Complete Vanni-Marcoux Emile Vanni-Marcoux (bass) rec. 1924-36 MARSTON 56001-2 [6 CDs: 451:11] [JW]

A singer of real importance devoted to clarity, appropriate gestures and a sure and sovereign command of every idiom he portrayed.
