A simply fabulous historical document that catches breathtaking performances on the wing. It is unlikely to be surpassed.
BARGAIN OF THE MONTH
Carlos CHAVEZ (1899-1978) The Complete Symphonies:- Nos. 1 (Sinfonia de Antigona); 2 (Sinfonia India); 3; 4 (Sinfonia Romantica); 5; 6 London Symphony Orchestra/Eduardo Mata
rec. 1981 VOX BOX CDX 5061 (2 discs, DDD) [135.01] £9.99 [PS]
With the exception of the popular Sinfonia India, these symphonies, contrapuntally complex as well as colourful, reveal Chavez to be both a serious symphonist and arguably Mexico's answer to J. S. Bach. The composer's compatriot, Eduardo Mata, gets the LSO players right on the edges of their seats, and the recording is spot on. This "cheap and cheerful" Vox Box would still be cheap at twice the price
Richard WAGNER Parsifal George London (A mfortas), Martti Talvela (Titurel), Hans Hotter (Gurnemanz), Jess Thomas (Parsifal), Gustav Neidlinger (Klingsor), Irene Dalis (Kundry) Chorus and Orchestra of the Bayreuth Festival Conducted by Hans Knappertsbusch Recorded live in the Festspielhaus at the 1962 Bayreuth Festival PHILIPS 50 GREAT RECORDINGS 464 756-2 4 CDs [250.12] [TD]
In so much as any recording can be called definitive, this is the definitive Parsifal. I doubt if it will ever be equalled
GREAT VOICES OF THE OPERA VOLUMES I, II AND III 1905-46, 1901-46, 1905-1949 120CDs see review for details
With the under-a-pound price for each disk and the wealth of repertory this is, for the opera buff, an astonishing purchase. If you have never heard the French baritone Gérard Souzay, for example (Box 2, Disk Case 15), this discovery alone could be worth the price of the entire set.
