Mirror of Eternity Aram KHACHATURIAN (1903-1978) Flute Concerto [36:49] Houtaf KHOURY (b.1967) Mirror of Eternity [24:48] Yevhen STANKOVYCH (b.1942) Chamber Symphony No.3 [18:10] Wissam Boustany (flute) National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine/Volodomyr Sirenko rec. 2004, NIMBUS ALLIANCE NI 6168 [79:47] [SA]

These works are ‘contemporary’ in the best sense of the word.

A Musical Journey: Spain - A Musical Tour of Seville Music by Bizet and Granados. NAXOS 2.110543 [54.21] [RJF]

I commend this most enjoyable visit to Seville. The views are particularly nicely blended with appropriate music.

RECORDING OF THE MONTH Notable Women Works by Auerbach, Garrop, Higdon, Schwendinger, Thomas & Tower Lincoln Trio rec. 2010/11 CEDILLE RECORDS CDR90000 126 [67:20] [Byz]

The marvellous Lincoln Trio sound both very comfortable and in total command of all this often highly exigent music.

Now Would All Freudians Please Stand Aside Works by Bach, Beethoven & Chopin James Rhodes (piano) rec. 2009 ABC CLASSICS 476 4593 [77:09 + 21:17 + DVD 5:07] [JW]

Rhodes’ musicianship partly informed by life’s vicissitudes, makes him such an interesting musician.

O Duo Stephen McNEFF (b.1951) Baristas Minoru MIKI (b.1930) Marimba Spiritual Jacob TER VELDHUIS (b.1951) Goldrush Edmund JOLLIFFE (b.1976) Knock About Frédéric CHOPIN (1810-1849) Fantaisie-Impromptu O Duo: Owen Gunnell, Oliver Cox (marimba, percussion) CHAMPS HILL RECORDS CHRCD 017 [77:44] [Byz]

Light listening, in sum. And yes, quite fun.

O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing - 18th Century Gallery Hymns Maddy Prior and The Carnival Band, The Mellstock Band REGIS RRC 1338 [62:20] [EM]

An intriguing release.

RECORDING OF THE MONTH Jelena Očić (cello) Johann Sebastian BACH (1685-1750)/ Ignaz MOSCHELES (1794-1870) 5 Studies in melodic counterpoint Ludwig van BEETHOVEN (1770-1827) Violin Sonata 9 (transcr. Czerny) Paul HINDEMITH (1895-1963) Cello Sonata Jelena Očić (cello) Federico Lovato (piano) rec. 2011 CHALLENGE CLASSICS CC72524 [74:27] [NB]

Simply stunning and revelatory … I do not expect to hear a better recital this year. Deserves to achieve classic status – more please.

Premičre French Organ Music Pétur Sakari (organ) rec. 2009 FUGA 9297 [73:15] [DM]

An impressive calling card. More, please.

Razor blades, little pills and big pianos Johann Sebastian BACH (1685-1750) French Suite 5; Chaconne Ludwig van BEETHOVEN (1770-1827) Piano Sonata 27 Fryderyk CHOPIN (1810-1849) Ballade 3 James Rhodes (piano) rec. 2008 ABC CLASSICS 476 4596 [68:42] [JW]

I’ll leave the questions of drugs and self-harm to one side and concentrate on his music-making which is consistently impressive.

Russian Overtures and Orchestral works Russian Natl O/Mikhail Pletnev rec. 1993-1994 NEWTON CLASSICS NC8802037 [62:02 + 67:25] [RB]

In the market for a superbly recorded and unhackneyed helping of Russian golden age works look no further.

Tullio Serafin Opera overtures and preludes by Verdi, Bellini, Rossini & Donizetti rec. 1959/61 MEDICI MASTERS MM0082 [71:57] [SV]

Your call but I can't really recommend this program as a whole.

Songs of Farewell Tenebrae/Nigel Short rec. 2011 SIGNUM RECORDS SIGCD267 [75.54] [MC]

Radiant performances, precise and incisive.

The Best of Teddy Tahu Rhodes see Yvonne Kenny

Traditional and Modern Carols Ch of New College Oxford/Edward Higginbottom rec. 1984-1991 REGIS RRC1330 [79:44] [JV]

Almost 80 minutes of exquisite singing.

Thomas Trotter: The Town Hall Tradition Alfred HOLLINS (1865-1942) Concert Overture 1 George THALBEN-BALL (1896-1987) Variations on a theme of Paganini for pedals Richard WAGNER (1813-1883) Overture The Mastersingers of Nuremberg, Ride of the Valkyries Pyotr Ilyich TCHAIKOVSKY (1840-1893) Ouverture Solennelle 1812 rec. 2010 REGENT REGDVD001 [68:13 + 30:35] [DM]

An auspicious DVD debut for Regent; I await their next release with great interest.

Victoria from the Heart - Love Songs. Victoria de los Ángeles(soprano) Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (baritone) Gerald Moore (piano) Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Pierre Monteux rec. 1951–1990 COLUMNA MUSICA 1CM0252 [73:14] [GF]

“Victoria from the heart!” So true!

Vienna Schubert Trio Ernest CHAUSSON (1855-1899) Piano Trio Claude DEBUSSY (1862-1918) Piano Trio Sergei RACHMANINOV (1873-1943) Piano Trio Vienna Schubert Trio rec. 1986 NIMBUS NI6159 [53:31 + 48:26] [JW]

This disparate and slightly odd-looking selection will win listeners, I’m sure.

White Nights Viola music from St. Petersburg Vol. 1 Tatjana Masurenko (viola) Roglit Ishay (piano) rec. 2010 PROFIL EDITION GÜNTER HÄNSSLER PH10029 [56:49] [PBW]

A highly enjoyable disc.

BOOK REVIEW

Gustav Holst: A Research and Information Guide Mary Christison Huismann

I will be putting this book to considerable use over the coming years … an essential tool for all who wish to dig deeper into Holst’s life, times and music.
