Antonio SALIERI (1750-1825) Il mondo alla rovescia Maria Laura Martorana; Marco Filippo Romano; Patrizia Cigna, Ch & O Arena di Verona/Federico Maria Sardelli rec. 2009 DYNAMIC CDS 655/1-2 [76:21 + 62:47] [GPu]

A fascinating work in a pleasing debut recording.

Alessandro SCARLATTI (1660 - 1725) Intermezzi fra Palandrana e Zamberlucco Barbara di Castri (soprano), Gastone Sarti (tenor) Fortuna Ens/Roberto Cascio rec. 2001 TACTUS TC 661908 [43:01] [JV]

Nice music, performed well. Lack of translation of the lyrics makes it hard to enjoy the story

Alessandro SCARLATTI (1660-1725) Cantatas Tempesta di Mare rec. 2009 CHANDOS CHAN 0768 [67:41] [J-PJ]

At first sight seems promising.

Franz SCHUBERT (1797-1827) Piano Sonatas 16 & 21 Wilhelm Kempff (pno), rec. 1950/3 DECCA ELOQUENCE 476 9913 [70:45] [WH]

Fine, wise performances by a master pianist, in variable sound.

Franz SCHUBERT (1797-1828) Piano Trio 2 see MENDELSSOHN

Robert SCHUMANN (1810-1856) Fantasy Pieces see Cohler

Alexander SCRIABIN (1872-1915) Étude, Deux Poèmes see Pogorelich

Déodat de SÉVERAC (1872–1921) Le Coeur du Moulin Sophie Marin-Degor, Marie-Thérèse Keller, Jean-Sébastien Bou, Pierre-Yves Pruvot, Ch l’Opéra de Tours, Région Centre Tours SO/Jean-Yves Ossonce, rec. 2009 TIMPANI 1C1176 [75:30] [HC]

A magnificent recording of de Séverac’s marvellous opera - definitely deserves to be heard

Rodion SHCHEDRIN (b.1932) Polyphonic Pieces & Preludes, Preludes and Fugues see Polyphonic Dialogues

Dmitri SHOSTAKOVICH (1906-1975) Preludes and Fugues see Polyphonic Dialogues

Dimitri SHOSTAKOVICH (1906-1975) Violin Concerto 1 see GLAZUNOV

Sir Charles Villiers STANFORD (1852-1924) Songs Of Old Ireland Gilberto Fornito (flute, piccolo); Christopher Howell (piano) rec. 2009/10 SHEVA SH031 [64:08] [JF]

An excellent disc that will satisfy and entertain

Richard STRAUSS (1864-1949) Der Rosenkavalier Adrianne Pieczonka, Angelika Kirchschlager, Miah Persson, Vienna PO/Semyon Bychkov rec. 2004 ARTHAUS MUSIK 107 139 [131:11 + 69:47] [GD]

All in all, a solid, traditional and well performed version.

Richard STRAUSS (1864-1949) Ein Heldenleben Anton WEBERN (1883-1945) Im Sommerwind Robert Chen (violin) Chicago SO/Bernard Haitink rec. 2008/9 CSO RESOUND CSOR 901 1002 [62:23] [JLZ]

Haitink invests the score with a welcome intensity.

Igor STRAVINSKY (1882-1971) Symphony in 3 Movements, Four Études, Pulcinella Chicago SO/Pierre Boulez, rec. 2009 CSO RESOUND CSOR901918 [71:12] [JZ]

An excellent addition to the already impressive CSO Resound series

Igor STRAVINSKY (1882-1971) Le Sacre de Printemps see Monteux

Igor STRAVINSKY (1882-1971) Le Sacre du printemps see RACHMANINOFF

Josef SUK (1874-1935) Sokol March, Serenade for Strings Antonín DVOŘÁK (1841-1904) Symphony 6 Czech PO/Vaclav Talich rec. 1938 NAXOS HISTORICAL 8.112050 [78:35] [BR]

The slow movement of Dvorák's Sixth will take your breath away, but the rest is good too.

Karl (Karol) SZYMANOWSKI (1882-1937) Cello sonata see CHOPIN

Pyotr Ilyich TCHAIKOVSKY (1840-1893) The Nutcracker Royal Philharmonic Orchestra/David Maninov rec. 1995 RPO SP 006 [45:24+41:40] [SV]

Merits, yes but no challenge to the reigning analog contenders: Ansermet and Bonynge

Pyotr Ilyich TCHAIKOVSKY (1840-1893) The Nutcracker see RACHMANINOFF

Ralph VAUGHAN WILLIAMS (1872-1958) The Wasps Overture, The Lark Ascending Frederick DELIUS (1862-1934) Florida Suite, Summer Evening Michael Bochmann (violin) English SO/William Boughton rec. 1989 NIMBUS NI5208 [65:59] [BW]

A strong contender principally for the neglected Florida Suite

Ian VENABLES (b.1955) At Midnight Invite to Eternity, 4 Songs, Flying Crooked, The Hippo, At Midnight, String Quartet Andrew Kennedy (tenor), Dante Qt, rec. 2009 SIGNUM SIGCD204 [58:04] [JF]

The greatest thing of all is that each of these pieces has the capacity to move.

Richard WAGNER (1813-1883) Parsifal George London, Josef Greindl, Ludwig Weber, Ramon Vinay, Hermann Uhde, Ch & O Bayreuth Festival/Clemens Krauss rec. 1953 PRISTINE PACO043 [3:54:50] [RMo]

A valuable and worthy issue of Wagner's last opera.

Richard WAGNER (1813-1883) Excerpts from Tannhäuser, Lohengrin & Götterdämmerung Kirsten Flagstad (soprano) Vienna PO, Phil O/Wilhelm Furtwängler rec. 1952-4 NAXOS HISTORICAL 8.111348 [64:59] [DH]

Reference pointers to incandescent live performances which, incredibly, take the drama and even the sound to a higher level.

William Vincent WALLACE (1812-1865) Lurline Sally Silver (soprano) Keith Lewis (tenor) Victorian Opera Ch & O/Richard Bonynge rec. 2009 NAXOS 8.660293-94 [74:58 + 75:25] [GF]

Lovers of good melodies should hasten to add this set to their collections

Anton WEBERN (1883-1945) Im Sommerwind see STRAUSS

Mieczyslaw WEINBERG (Moisei VAINBERG) (1919-1996) Symphony 1, Cello Concerto Dmitry Khrychov (cello) St Petersburg State Academic SO/Alexander Titov rec. 2008 NORTHERN FLOWERS NF/PMA 9973 [70:59] [JW]

Performed with sensitivity and control

Bruce WOLOSOFF (b.1955) Songs without Words Carpe Diem String Qt rec. 2008 NAXOS DIGITAL 8.559663 [56:06] [BR]

By no means great music, but that might not be the point.

Carl ZELLER (1842-1898) Der Obersteiger Santiago Bürgi (tenor) Cornelia Zink (soprano) Ch & O Der Musik Theater Schönbrunn/Herbert Mogg rec. 2009 CPO 777549-2 [44:01 + 42:00] [JS]

Plenty to enjoy here for the lover of the genre

Mikolaj ZIELENSKI (fl. 1611) Offertoria Totius Anni 1611 Collegium Zielensk/Capella Cracoviensis/Stanislaw Galonski rec. 2008-9 DUX 0740 [75:01] [JV]

Disappointing start of a project to record the complete works of Zielenski
