Each disc comes with its own little field of gravity, bringing you back every time.

A fascinating document of Schiff's early years.

This stunning Onyx release can compete with the very best

Two celebrated Beethoven sonatas in expert but rather under-characterised performances.

This set of the Beethoven piano concertos is a very considerable achievement

Ludwig van BEETHOVEN (1770-1827) Symphony 8 Anton BRUCKNER (1824-1896) Symphony 1 Vienna PO/Claudio Abbado, rec. 1968-9 DECCA ELOQUENCE 476 9890 [72:10] [SV]

An Italianate Bruckner and a rich and vivid Beethoven.

Well worth hearing … enjoyable but one to file under promising rather than benchmark recording.

Ludwig van BEETHOVEN (1770-1827) Symphonies 6 & 7 Detroit SO/Paul Paray rec. 1953-4 PRISTINE AUDIO PASC 206 [71:59] [MG]

Good in parts, and there's cause to be grateful to Guild in assembling an unusual collection.

Anton BRUCKNER (1824-1896) Symphony 7 Berlin PO/Jascha Horenstein rec. 1928 PRISTINE AUDIO PASC 203 [58:58] [JQ]

A fine Bruckner performance in an excellent transfer.

An excellent CD. Good to see that Arthur Butterworth is gradually getting the attention that he manifestly deserves. The playing is superb, the sound quality equally so.

George BUTTERWORTH (1885-1916) The Complete Butterworth Songbook Mark Stone (bar.), Stephen Barlow (pno) rec. 2009 STONE RECORDS 5060192780024 [71:03] [JQ]

A valuable and well-produced survey of Butterworth’s songs
