RECORDING OF THE MONTH Peter Mattei - Great Baritone Arias Royal Stockholm PO/Lawrence Renes rec. 2008-10 BIS BISSACD1749 [63:51] [OL]

A glorious disc!

Miserere Sacred works by Allegri, Palestrina, Lotti, Victoria, Monteverdi, Cavalli & Gabrieli Westminster Cathedral Ch/Stephen Cleobury rec. 1982 NEWTON CLASSICS 8802042 [49.31] [GH]

New to the music of the high renaissance? Then this disc is a really good place to start.

Music for the Queen of Scots The Flautadors rec. 2009 DEUX-ELLES DXL 1144 [62.01] [GH]

An enjoyable disc, nicely presented and beautifully played.

MY FAIR LADY & GIGI Original Casts 1956 & 1958 Retrospective RTR 4181 [TA]

This is well-recorded and good value

My spirit hath rejoiced - Settings of the Evening Canticles by Noble, Howells, Murrill, Harwood, Darke, Sumsion & Dyson St Paul's Cathedral Ch/John Scott rec. 1988 HYPERION HELIOS CDH55402 [60:50] [JS]

There is something intoxicating about the overall effect which goes far beyond the disciplined requirements of daily worship into realms of pure music.

Organ Music from Northern Europe Music by Sibelius, Gade, Glazunov, Mushel & Nielsen Paul Trepte (organ) rec. 1992 HERITAGE HTGCD 214 [76:13] [DM]

Will appeal to organ aficionados everywhere.

OrganOrgan Historical Finnish organ works by Maasalo, Granlund & Raitio Ville Urponen (organ) rec. 2008 ALBA RECORDS ABCD 298 [67:19] [DM]

One of the most satisfying recitals I’ve heard in ages. A mandatory purchase for organ fanciers and discerning audiophiles alike.

Willem Van Otterloo The original recordings 1951-1966 all items conducted by Willem van Otterloo Full contents list bottom of review CHALLENGE CLASSICS CC72383 [7 CDs: for timings see individual disc details] [CH]

Extraordinarily fine performances of a range of music. When the red light went on Van Otterloo proved invariably able to fire up an orchestra.

Reflections ‘Folk In A Boat ELF Trio - Dave Lee (horn); Geoff Eales (piano); Andy Findon (flute) No recording details NIMBUS NI 6150 [78:24] [JW]

Un-pigeonholed musicians working hard and enjoying themselves.

Russian Piano Miniatures for Children Pyotr Ilyich TCHAIKOVSKY (1840-1893) A children’s album Sergei PROKOFIEV (1891-1953) Music for children Op.65 Dmitri SHOSTAKOVICH (1906-1975) Five pieces for children arr. Levon Atovmian A child’s exercise book Op.69 Rimma Bobritskaya (piano) rec. 1991, BRILLIANT CLASSICS 9214 [60:15] [SA]

The result is a very satisfying one which anyone who loves piano music will thoroughly enjoy.

Hommage à Bidú Sayão - Volume 4 Bidú Sayão (soprano) Milne Charnley (piano) Bell Telephone Hour O/Donald Voorhees, Wilfred Pelletier, rec. 1938-54 CEMBAL D’AMOUR CD 153 [72:11] [JW]

This slice of Sayão’s broadcast life preserves her sense of communicative charm with great relish.

Stefan Schulz - Berlin Recital Johannes BRAHMS (1833-1897) Vier ernste Gesänge Stjepan ŠULEK (1914-1986) Sonata Vox Gabrieli Alexei LEBEDEV (1924-1983) Concerto 1 Daniel SCHNYDER (b.1961) subZERO Stefan Schulz (bass trombone) Tomoko Sawano (piano) Aleksander Ivic (violin) Maria Schneider (marimba) Julian Sulzberger (percussion) rec. 2008 BIS-CD-1824 [56:22] [GD]

Impressive. Schulz is a major talent and I look forward to his next recital recording.

BARGAIN OF THE MONTH Elisabeth Schwarzkopf Sings Operetta Nicolai Gedda (tenor) Philharmonia O/Otto Ackermann, Herbert von Karajan rec. 1950s ALTO ALC 1122 [72:27] [GF]

I kept listening through the whole recital and ended up playing it once again from beginning to end. Absolutely marvellous!

Shakespeare Inspired Michelle Breedt (mezzo), Nina Schumann (piano) rec. Endler Hall, Stellenbosch University, South Africa, 22-28 November 2010 TWOPIANISTS RECORDS TP1039077 [67:21] [CH]

Breedt’s voice is a splendid instrument. She is not yet quite a natural in this repertoire but she may yet become so.

Trumpet Panoply Works by Arutiunian, Hummel, Tartini & Peaslee John Holt (trumpet and flugelhorn) UNT SO/Anshel Brusilow & Clay Couturiaux; Slovak Radio SO/Kirk Trevor rec. 2006/7 CRYSTAL RECORDS CD769 [56:49] [JW]

A patchily performed disc.

Violin Solo - Vol. 5 Works by Prokofiev, Maric, Tubin, Bacewicz, Denisov Renate Eggebrecht (violin) rec.2009 TROUBADISC TRO-SACD 01436 [78:49] [DC]

An aura of encroaching struggle.

Virtuoso Giuseppe TARTINI (1692-1770) The Devil’s Trill sonata Johann Sebastian BACH (1685-1750) Chaconne Henryk WIENIAWSKI (1835-1880) Légende; Variations on an Original Theme César FRANCK (1822-1890) Violin Sonata Ray Chen (violin) Noreen Polera (piano) rec. 2010 SONY CLASSICS 88697 829672 [79:02] [SA]

Overall this disc is a powerful argument that Chen is on his way to becoming the virtuoso the cover says he is!

Volkslieder - Vol. 2 Traditional German Folksongs rec. 2001-10 CARUS 83.004 [53.38] [RH]

You could just sit back and listen.
