My True Love Hath My Heart English Songs by Britten, Howells and Rodney Bennett Sarah Connolly (mezzo) Malcolm Martineau (piano) rec. 2011 CHANDOS CHAN10691 [63:00] [WH]

A gorgeous recital of English song that should, in a just world, become a classic.

Naxos Travelogue - Christmas goes Baroque: A Musical Tour of Switzerland, Germany and Belgium Christmas music in the style of Bach, Handel and Vivaldi (arr. Peter Breiner) Slovak State Philharmonic/Peter Breiner NAXOS DVD 2.110546 [52.38] [RF]

Plenty of interesting content, well photographed, complements the musical arrangements of popular Christmas tunes.

Naxos Travelogue - A Musical Tour of the Graubünden, Switzerland Music by Handel Capella Istropolitana/Josef Kopelma Director: G. Gachet NAXOS DVD 2.110541 [54.59] [RJF]

One of the best of this series to come my way.

RECORDING OF THE MONTH  Anna Netrebko - Live at the Metropolitan Opera Metropolitan Opera Ch & O rec. 2002-2010 DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON 477 9903 [66:01] [OL]

A great souvenir of a most wonderful voice.

RECORDING OF THE MONTH On Christmas Night Ch St John’s College, Cambridge/Andrew Nethsingha rec. 2011 CHANDOS CHSA5096 [74:22] [JQ]

This excellent and most enjoyable disc will be a high quality Christmas present for a musical friend - or to give to yourself!

The Opera Show with Mairi Nicolson rec. 1959-2011 ABC CLASSICS 480 5629 [75.40 + 71.48] [RJF]

A well thought out collection of variety and diversity that will lighten many a car journey or trip to the gym.

Oriental Rhapsody Mily BALAKIREV (1837-1910) Tamara Nikolai RIMSKY-KORSAKOV (1844-1908) Antar Alexander GLAZUNOV (1865-1936) Oriental Rhapsody USSR State Academic SO/Evgeny Svetlanov rec. 1977/80 MELODIYA MELCD10 01828 [79:30] [JW]

This well selected trio of performances should appeal widely even if, like me, you prefer an alternative Antar.

Oxford Church Anthems Christ Church Cathedral Choir, Oxford/Stephen Darlington Stephen Farr (organ) rec. 23-24 May 1994, Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, UK. DDD
NIMBUS NI 5440 [59:01] [JV]

Lovers of English anthems will certainly enjoy this disc

Paganini’s Daemon A Most Enduring Legend Directed by Christopher Nupen, with Gidon Kremer, John Williams, Svizzera Italiana Ch & O/Lawrence Foster ALLEGRO FILMS A12CND [79:00] [JW]

A handsome film, doubtless partial, but well worth watching.

Music for piano pédalier Works by Boely, Alkan Liszt and Schumann Olivier Latry (piano pédalier) rec. 2011 NAÏVE/CITÉ DE LA MUSIQUE V 5278 [76:40] [DC]

A unique piece of history brought vividly to life.

The Pulitzer Project William SCHUMAN (1910-1992) A Free Song Aaron COPLAND (1900-1990) Appalachian Spring Suite Leo SOWERBY (1895-1968) The Canticle of the Sun Grant Park Ch & O/Carlos Kalmar rec. 2010 CEDILLE RECORDS CDR 90000 125 [74:00] [WK]

World premieres of two major American choral works - long overdue.

Reiner Rarities Volume 2: Works by Mozart, Brahms, Debussy & Liebermann Marian Anderson (contralto) NBC SO, RCA Victor SO, Sauter-Finegan O, Chicago SO rec. 1950-4 PRISTINE AUDIO PASC 294 [67:20] [JW]

A disc worth having if you’re a Reiner convert. A snug fit in the Reiner discography.

Sviatoslav Richter — Concerto Edition; Historical Russian Archives Sviatoslav Richter (piano) rec. 1952-1983 BRILLIANT CLASSICS 9199 [10 CDs: c.11:36:00] [JW]

By and large these Brilliant performances have been preserved well and are generally in good shape.

The Songs of England John Potter (tenor) Lucie Skeaping (mezzo) Jo Freya (voice) The Broadside Band, Rose Consort of Viols, Nigel Eaton rec. 1992 REGIS RRC1337 [76:30] [Byz]

Certainly worth snapping up.

BBC Songs of Praise rec. 1961-1993 EMI TV VTDC 1032 6795232 [2 CDs: c.150:00] [RB]

A compact and variegated reminder of a programme that shows no sign of losing its rising and inspirational voice.

Leopold Stokowski Works by Mahler, Shostakovich, Vaughan Williams, Ravel & Brahms New PO, London SO rec.1963-74 BBC LEGENDS BBCL5007-2 [3 CDs: 79:59 + 71:40 + 78:24] [RMo]

Sweep and virility … simply gorgeous …the music exhales an exotic, erotic perfumed breath.

Joan Sutherland Arias and Mad Scenes Royal Opera House O/Francesco Molinari-Pradelli, Paris Conservatoire O/Nello Santi (2) rec. 1959/60 ALTO ALC 1155 [77:05] [RH]

Showcases the talents of the young Sutherland.

Totus Tuus Works by Görecki, Pärt, Čurlionis, Kilar, Raimins, Vasks & Schnittke Versija Chamber Choir/Juris Vaivods and Raitis Grigalis; Aivars Kalejs (organ) JADE 699 730-2 [66:56] [WH]

An interesting collection of modern sacred choral music, well sung on the whole, but in a very difficult acoustic.

Una musa plebea – Everyday Music from Renaissance Italy Lucidarium rec. 2004-2009 RAUMKLANG RK2410 [67.03] [GH]

A curious and fascinating disc. Something a little different.

Vêpres Monastiques Russes Choeur des Moines du Monastère de l’Union à Chevetogne rec. 1965 EDITION ANDRÉ CHARLIN AMS64 [42:06] [GH]

The singing is excellent, clear and with pure intonation, faultless I would say for a quiet vespers service and with a tangible atmosphere.
