Pierre Attaingnant - Jeux d'orgue et de voix Jean-Patrice Brosse (organ) Vox Cantoris/Jean-Christophe Candau rec. 2011 PSALMUS PSAL 015 [67:38] [JV]

Offers a fascinating account of liturgical practice in early 16th-century France.

Les Autographes Vocaux Historic recordings of music by French composers and of the composers speaking. rec. 1930-31 TIMPANI 1C1201 [77:27] [RB]

Inevitably for specialists but other will make discoveries here.

RECORDING OF THE MONTH  Ay, Portugal 16th and 17th Century Music from Portugal and Spain Siobhan Stagg (soprano) La Compañia/Danny Lucin rec. 2011 ABC CLASSICS 476 4955 [50.20] [GH]

Pleasing, evocative performances of a charming and haunting repertoire.

A DR Tribute to Erling Blöndal Bengtsson The Early Danish Recordings: 1955-59 - Concertos by Barber, Bentzon & Salomon Erling Blöndal Bengtsson (cello) Danish State RSO/Nikolai Malko, Thomas Jensen rec. November 1955-59 DANACORD DACOCD727 [78:54] [JW]

A really first-class collection, excellently presented and of lasting musical and interpretative worth.

Blue Silence - Australian music for cello and piano David Pereira (cello); Timothy Young (piano) rec. 2011 TALL POPPIES TP222 [70:09] [NB]

A worthwhile project skilfully executed.

The Britannic Organ Vol. 4 Eugene Gigout, Joseph Bonnet (organ) rec. 2012 OEHMS CLASSICS OC843 [80:21 + 78:24] [HP-R]

A mechanical rendition of masterworks, literally!

But not forgotten Music by African-American composers for clarinet and piano Marcus Eley (clarinet) Lucerne DeSa (piano) rec. 2009 SONO LUMINUS DSL-92156 [50:02] [SA]

A disc of unalloyed joy.

José Carreras The Comeback Concerts Vincenzo Scalera, Ronald Schneider(piano) rec. 1988 ACANTA 233552 [75:40] [DBe]

Fans of Carreras will not need any persuasion that this CD is for them.

Come Blow Your Horn Music for horn and piano by Saint-Saëns, Poulenc, Dukas, Damase & Defaye Guglielmo Pellarin (horn); Federico Lovato (piano) rec. 2009 AUDITE 97.538 [51.33] [JB]

As entertaining as it is informative.

Duo Robert SCHUMANN (1810-1856) Drei Fantasiestücke Johannes BRAHMS (1833-1897) Cello Sonata 1 Claude DEBUSSY (1862-1918) Cello Sonata Dmitri SHOSTAKOVICH (1906–1975) Cello Sonata Sol Gabetta (cello) Hélčne Grimaud (piano) rec. 2012 DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON 479 0090 [75:10] [MC]

Admirably played and recorded the whole listening experience was gratifying from start to finish.

RECORDING OF THE MONTH  Eine Deutsche Messe German sacred music for a cappella male voices Ensemble Nobiles rec. 2011-2012 GENUIN GEN12242 [69:30] [ST]

Definitely worth exploring. Melted my heart and made me feel rather moved.

The Enchanted Island Danielle de Niese (soprano) Joyce DiDonato (mezzo) Placido Domingo (tenor) Metropolitan Opera Ch & O/William Christie rec. 2011 VIRGIN CLASSICS 4042499 [98:00 + 82:00] [JZ]

All in all, this should delight.

In festo angelorum - A journey through Spanish, Portuguese and Italian Baroque sacred music Monica Piccinini (soprano) Manuel Vilas (harp) rec. 2008 BRILLIANT CLASSICS 94428 [68:05] [JV]

An interesting programme of largely unknown pieces by mostly little-known composers.

RECORDING OF THE MONTH Get Happy - Virtuoso showtunes for piano Jenny Lin (piano) rec. 2012 STEINWAY & SONS 30011 [64:05]  [BR]

“Get Happy”? The title sounds bossy, but it isn’t, because the album works like a charm.

A Harvest of Twentieth Century Bassoon Music Works by Villa-Lobos, Welcher, Luke, Matthews, Bitsch & Noon Leonard Sharrow and Joseph Polisi (bassoons) Crystal CO/Ernest Gold rec. 1970s CRYSTAL CD342 [79:51] [RB]

This CD could hardly be fuller of music rich in contrast, affluent in variety.

Idylls and Bacchanals Louise Williams (viola, violin) David Owen Norris (piano) rec. 2011/12 EM RECORDS EMR CD007/8 [69:37 + 63:13] [JW]

Lovers of British music will find this invaluable and stimulating.

Il tormento e l'estasi Luigi ROSSI (c.1597-1653) Un peccator pentito Giacomo CARISSIMI (1605-1674) Historia di Jephte Los Músicos de Su Alteza/Luis Antonio González rec. 2010 ALPHA 183 [64:10] [JV]

A compelling disc including some masterpieces of the 17th century.

Invocación Mattias Jacobsson (guitar) rec. 2010/12 AVIE AV2254 [62:19] [Byz]

The Tárrega-Jacobsson combination is one that should be experienced by all musical epicures.

The Irish Piano Michael McHale (piano) rec. 2012 RTÉ LYRIC FM CD139 [73:18] [SA]

A disc of disarmingly charming and beguiling music.

Italian Virtuosi of the Chitarrone Jakob Lindberg (chitarrone) rec. 2011 BIS BIS-CD-1899 [74:00] [BR]

A great sampler menu of music for chitarrone, which is as good as its cover is funny.

Philippe Jaroussky La voix des rêves - Greatest Moments in Concert rec. 2006-12 VIRGIN CLASSICS 0175919 [161:00] [BW]

Admirable unless you dislike Jaroussky’s very high counter-tenor.

Philippe Jaroussky The Voice rec. 2008-12 VIRGIN CLASSICS 6026602 [76:08 + 73:58] [BW]

Despite the amount of rehashed material and my preference for the very similar blu-ray set, well worth having.

Kalkadungu Works by William & Delmae Barton & Peter Sculthorpe William Barton (didjeridu) rec. 2003-09 ABC CLASSICS 476 4834 [78:32] [OL]

Demanding yet rewarding.

Yvonne Lefébure (piano) Les Inédits SOLSTICE SOCD283/85 [3 CDs: 212:33] [JW]

Solo Lefébure. Sound quality variable but never less than very adequate. Performances a good deal more than that.
