MacGregor's playing an choice of repertoire is cuttingly barbed and honed with interest and allure.

Frederic CHOPIN (1810-1849) Etudes, Op. 10 (1829-1833) [30:02] Etudes, Op. 25 (1833-1837) [32:41] Ronald Smith (piano) rec. 1989, NIMBUS NI 5223 [62:43] [DJ]

Claude DEBUSSY (1862-1918) Etudes see Ives

Claude DEBUSSY (1862-1918) Prélude ŕ l’aprčs-midi d’un faune see RAVEL

With performances of such distinction and quality, this disc would make a first-rate introduction to Josquin’s music.

Josquin DES PRES (c.1455-1521) Messe Gaudeamus, Les Fresques Musicales de Saint-Bonnet-Le-Chateau Groupe des instruments anciens de Paris, Ensemble des Chantres de Plain-Chant rec. 1960 EDITIONS ANDRÉ CHARLIN CL40 [46:25] [JW]

Despite questionable lighting, if you can afford it go for the DVD. Subtitles make the complications of the action and the plot so much clearer.

Exultant lyricism from a justifiably confident Portuguese late-romantic.

Girolamo FRESCOBALDI (1583-1643) Volume 4 Richard Lester (organ, *harpsichord) DDD NIMBUS NI 5874 [78:05] [Byz]

Expressive playing, full of harmonic extravagances, rhythmic flexibility, experimental techniques and technical challenges.
