Mélodies Works by Debussy, Duparc, Saint-Saëns, Chabrier, Hahn & Ravel Stéphane Degout (baritone) Hélène Lucas (piano) rec. 2010 NAÏVE V5209 [74:00] [GF]

A very appealing recital.

Mélodies Songs by Gabriel Fauré and Henri Duparc Hugues Cuénod (tenor) Martin Isepp, Geoffrey Parsons (piano) rec. 1972-8 NIMBUS NI 5736-37 [65:03 + 62:57] [JW]

A characteristically nasal voice with an individual sound that makes comparisons unprofitable.

Music@Menlo - Maps and Legends 1-8 rec. 2002-2010 MUSIC@MENLO No catalogue number [8 CDs: 588:45] [JW]

Music@Menlo - a chamber festival with a strong educative base, first held in 2002 and still going strong.

Naked Byrd Two Anna Sandström, Kirsteen Rogers, Rachel Robinson (soprano) Peter Morton (tenor) Kelly McCusker (violin) Armonico Consort/Christopher Monks rec. 2010 SIGNUM SIGCD235 [52:40] [BW]

Not much Byrd, despite the title, but an attractive assemblage of powerfully emotive music.

Norwegian Safari Øivind Farmen (accordion) Elise Båtnes (violin) AURORA ACD5064 [43:45] [Byz]

Worthy of consideration by anyone interested in adventurous accordion music but playing time is an issue.

Overtures in Hi-Fi O de L’Opéra-Comique, Paris & Paris Conservatoire O/Albert Wolff rec. 1951-7 DECCA ELOQUENCE 480 2385 [70:19 + 74:00] [DM]

Joyous music-making … just too tempting to resist.

Oxford Anthems The Choir of New College, Oxford/Edward Higginbottom rec. 1987-2007 HERITAGE HTGCD 217 [73:00] [JV]

An attractive sampler though as nice as this disc may be those interested in the history of the English anthem should look for the original recordings.

Reflection Choir of Clare College, Cambridge/Timothy Brown HERITAGE HTGCD 212 CD [66:00] [JQ]

Immaculate performances though the repertoire is of uneven quality.

Renaissance Music by SUSATO, FRESCOBALDI, GABRIELI, DOWLAND arr. for saxophone quartet Berlin Saxophone Quartet Clemens Hoffmann (soprano sax) Theo Nabicht (alto sax) Christof Griese (tenor sax) Friedemann Graef (baritone sax) rec. 2009 CPO 777 581-2 [63:13] [DM]

A sense of adventure and fun.

Resurrection Herbert HOWELLS (1892-1983) Like as the Hart Desireth Waterbrooks Adam POUNDS (b.1954) Life Cycle; Martyrdom of Latimer Gerald FINZI (1901-1956) Lo, the Full Final Sacrifice Academy of Great St. Mary’s/Sam Hayes/Adam Pounds rec. 2010 CAMBRIDGE RECORDINGS CAMREC004 [48:48] [JF]

Adam Pounds: an underrated master of the orchestra.

Elisabeth Schwarzkopf Perfect Prima Donna EMI CLASSICS ICON 9184592 [10 CDs: 742:46] [DBe]

A very special collection of lieder, opera and operetta from one of the great post-war sopranos.

Oxana Shevchenko (piano) Works by Ravel, Shostakovich, Liszt, Mozart & Musgrave rec. 2010 DELPHIAN DCD34061 [65:29] [JW]

Playing of considerable poise, maturity and genuine accomplishment.

Smile – Carol Jarvis Carol Jarvis (trombone) Orchestra/Roderick Dunk rec. 2009 DIVINE ART DIVERSIONS DDV24150 [62:47] [CT]

Recorded in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, a charity close to Carol Jarvis’s heart for very personal reasons, Smile is an entertaining and highly polished showcase of the soloist’s versatility on the trombone.

Renata Tebaldi sings Puccini & Verdi Favourites rec. 1954-1959 ALTO ALC 1133 [67:46] [DBe]

One of the most naturally beautiful voices on record. Tebaldi’s achievements should not be underrated.

Written in Sand - Works by Ruders, Hallgrímsson & Salonen Sølve Sigerland (violin) Risør Festival Strings/Per Kristian Skalstad rec. 2004/2008 SIMAX CLASSICS PSC1301 [59:14] [Byz]

Most violin lovers interested in the more tonal end of late 20th century music should find this a very satisfying acquisition.
