A superb showcase. Anyone interested in contemporary choral music should try it.

Nutcracker Suite Music transcribed for mandolin: Miguel LLOBET (1878-1938) Four Catalan Folksongs Pyotr Il'yich TCHAIKOVSKY (1840-1893) The Nutcracker Suite Gabriel FAURÉ (1845-1924) Pavane Antonio VIVALDI (1678-1741) Concerto in D major for lute, two violins and basso continuo, Modern Mandolin Qt rec. 2003 DORIAN SONO LUMINUS 92121 [51:24] [RMay]

Only the absence of a power cut made me realise that I wasn’t back in the 1970s after all.

Pax - Gregorian chant Monks of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Benoit du Lac/Dom Andre Saint-Cyr rec. 1996 ANALEKTA AN29776 [64.42] [RH]

The Rodolfus Choir Choral Collection Ralph Allwood, Ben Parry (directors) rec. 1994-2004 SIGNUM CLASSICS SIGCD243 [3 CDs: 199:54] [JW]

The performances are generally excellent, so too the recordings.

Songs of yesterday Music for recorder and keyboard by Bowen, Rubbra, Scott, Murrill, Leigh and Berkeley Dan Laurin (recorder) Anna Paradiso (harpsichord/piano) rec. 2009 BIS–CD-1785 [67:27] [GF]

Those who still regard the recorder as a beginners’ instrument should definitely hear this and many will revise their opinion.

Frederica von Stade (mezzo) Song Recital - songs by Dowland, Purcell, Liszt, Debussy, Canteloube & Hall Martin Katz (piano) rec. 1977 SONY CLASSICAL 78516 [51:43] [RM]

Thoroughly absorbing … one of the most sheerly beautiful and instantly recognisable mezzos of the last thirty-odd years.

Frederica von Stade (mezzo) Italian Opera Arias National Arts Centre O/Mario Bernardi rec. 1977/8 SONY CLASSICAL 78518 [50:43] [RMo]

Displays all the merits, virtues and charms of von Stade’s mezzo range.

Transformation Works by Stravinsky, Scarlatti, Brahms & Ravel Yuja Wang (piano) rec. 2010 DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON 477 8795 [57:53] [GA]

A fine recital by a young artist in whom a sound technique is allied to a thoughtful sensibility and dramatic projection.

BARGAIN OF THE MONTH Tudor Anthems and Motets Ch Clare College, Cambridge/Timothy Brown rec. 1991, 1993. HERITAGE HTGCD 216 [67:32] [JQ]

A most desirable disc that provides an excellent introduction to the treasure chest of Tudor sacred music.

Should swell the chest cavities of Welsh men and women the length and breadth of the principality, especially those that don't actually live there.

The Beginning of a Legend John Williams - His first recording Works by Bach, Scarlatti, Sor, Albeniz, Ponce, Duarte, Segovia, Tansman & Granados John Williams (guitar) rec. 1958 IDIS 6600 [65:18] [ZT]

An important historical recording.
