The Irresistible Karita Mattila Arias and Songs Karita Mattila (soprano) Finnish RSO/Jukka-Pekka Saraste; Jyväskylä Sinf/Riko Niemi; Tapiola Sinf/Pekka Savijoki rec. 1995-2010 ONDINE ODE1171-2 [57:26] [GF]

A very attractive disc.

Michelangeli The Early Recordings 1939-1951 Vol. 2 Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART (1756-1791) Piano Concerto 15 Ludwig van BEETHOVEN (1770-1827) Piano Sonata 3 Frédéric CHOPIN (1810-1849) Piano pieces Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli (piano) dell’Ente dei Pomeriggi Musicali di Milano SO/Ettore Gracis rec. 1940-51 NAXOS 8.112052 [74:18] [BBr]

A fascinating collection of early Michelangeli recordings which show him to best advantage.

Music for St Paul’s George Frideric HANDEL (1685-1759) Utrecht Te Deum, Utrecht Jubilate John BLOW (1649-1708) I was glad when they said unto me William BOYCE (1711-1779) Lord, thou hast been our refuge St Paul’s Cathedral Ch; The Parley of Instruments/John Scott rec. 1997 HYPERION HELIOS CDH55359 [74:13] [JS]

Certainly worth hearing for the music itself, especially the Blow and Boyce

BARGAIN OF THE MONTH Nobel Prize Concert Maurice RAVEL (1875-1937) Piano concerto Serge PROKOFIEV (1891-1953) Romeo and Juliet Suites 1 & 2 Martha Argerich (pno), Royal Stockholm PO/Yuri Temirkanov, rec. 2009 EUROARTS 2057898 [80:00] [CF]

Electrifying.

Vlado Perlemuter The Nimbus Recordings NIMBUS [14 CDs] [JW]

Consistently illuminating, exceptionally well played, and historically important.Selectivity will prove rewarding. Enlightenment will be permanent.

The Piano at the Ballet Anthony Goldstone (piano) rec. 2008 DIVINE ART DDA25073 [79:53] [JS]

It would be hard to be bored by it or finish listening to it other than in a cheerful mood.

Of Polish Kings Canor Anticus/Marcin Zalewski, rec. 1996-7 DUX 0761 [57:50] [JV]

Largely unknown repertoire from the Polish renaissance, beautifully played by a Polish viol consort

Polish Songs by Chopin, Karlowicz, Moniuszko & Paderewski Olga Maroszek (alto); Elzbieta Tyszecka (piano) rec. 2009 ACTE PRÉALABLE AP0201 [41:54] [WH]

Some lovely songs, well performed and recorded, but the programme lacks variety

Prima Donna - Leading Ladies of Opera Various artists WARNER 5051442 858693 [81:00] [GF]

Those who prefer their favourite singers in isolated scenes will have their fill of morsels here

Reservoir Isabelle O'Connell (piano) rec. 2009 DIATRIBE DIACDSOL001 [57:32] [JW]

Much here is rooted in poetic triggers, canonic or contemporary. The sea too is a frequent presence, both relentless and relenting

Aaron Rosand in Norway Christian SINDING Suite for violin and orchestra Camille SAINT-SAENS Havanaise; Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso Klaus EGGE Violin Concerto Edouard LALO Symphonie Espagnole Pyotr Ilyich TCHAIKOVSKY Sérénade Melancolique Jean SIBELIUS Humoresque Pablo de SARASATE Zigeunerweisen Aaron Rosand (violin) Norwegian RO/Sverre Brulund, Bergen PO/Karsten Andersen rec. 1975-80 VAI VAIA 1240-2 [59:57 + 61:30] [RB]

Exultantly elite violin playing from a too easily and certainly unjustly neglected master.

BARGAIN OF THE MONTH Sacred Music in the Renaissance The Tallis Scholars Finest Recordings: 1980-1989 The Tallis Scholars/Peter Phillips rec. 1980-1989 GIMELL GIMBX 301 [4 CDs: 78:34 + 79:37 + 78:33 + 78:35] [JQ]

An outstandingly generous thirtieth birthday present from Gimell Records to us.

Sounds' Falls George GERSHWIN (1898-1937) Variations on I Got Rhythm, Preludes, Rhapsody in Blue Samuel BARBER (1910-1981) Souvenirs Aaron COPLAND (1900-1990) Variations on a Shaker Melody Anna Lisa Fergola and Roberto Ramadori (piano duet) rec. 2009 VELUT LUNA CVLD 186 [59:27] [BBr]

Good intentions aren't enough.

Stokowski NBC Pops NBC Symphony Orchestra/Leopold Stokowski GUILD GHCD 2361 [67:31] [BBr]

There's much to enjoy.

Toss the Feathers Dermot Crehan (violin), Luke Daniels (Button Accordion), Mick Sands (voice), Fiona Kelly (flute, whistles), Jean Kelly (harp), RTE Concert O/Gearoid Grant rec. 2007 RTE LYRIC FM TESS RECORDSTR0901 [54:20] [EM]

A rather mixed disc – some of the orchestrations work very well but others detracted. A pleasant and entertaining listen.

Traditional Music for the Qin Zither Lin Youren (zither) rec. 1998 NIMBUS NI5656 [70:19] [MS]

Calm, meditative playing of the Chinese zither

Trecento Jill Feldman (soprano); Kees Boeke (flutes, fiddle) rec. 2001 ET'CETERA KTC 1902 [66:47] [JV]

Refined repertoire from the early renaissance in France and Italy in perfect performances.

Vocalise Cello Interpretations Caroline Worthington (cello) Thelma Houston (vocal) Second Power South Central Ch. O & Ch MSR CLASSICS MS1202 [71:26] [SV]

A misconceived dud.

The Winchester Tradition Winchester College Chapel Ch/Malcolm Archer Paul Provost (organ) rec. 2007 REGENT REGCD331 [70:41] [JS]

A very engaging disc, full of interesting and varied music, well performed.
