Another imaginative, well-executed offering from BIS.

Contemporary British Organ Music - Volume 1 Music by Gabriel Jackson & Laurence Crane Mark O’Keefe (trumpet), Michael Bonaventure (organ) rec. 2010 SFZ MUSIC SFZM0410 [72:51] [BBr]

Two very exciting British composers who have made their mark on the UK’s music in very different ways.

Bound For Glory - Songs and Piano Music on a Railway Theme Gordon Pullin (tenor) John Gough (piano) STEWART ORR SOUND SERVICES SOSSCD369 [70:14] [JF]

A great CD introducing a wide variety of British song … unusual and challenging.

Convergence Music for Piano and Percussion Strike rec. 2009 LUMINESCENCE RECORDS LUM002 [65:49] [NB]

Not the comfy-chair school of mogadon-music but serious and significant music all composed and performed with exceptional skill and musicality and no little wit.

Diva Danielle de Niese (soprano) O Age of Enlightenment/Sir Charles Mackerras rec. 2007-10 DECCA 478 2417 DH [56.06] [RF]

This poor value disc is a marketing ploy that tells us nothing of Miss de Niese’s development

BARGAIN OF THE MONTH English Lute Songs Robin Blaze (counter-tenor); Elizabeth Kenny (lute) rec. 1999 HYPERION HELIOS CDH55249 [70:34] [EM]

A superb disc of excellent programme and performance.

A very warm welcome back to this disc – a gently life-enhancing potter through less demanding pathways.

Firebirds of Paris rec. 1927-1949 MARSTON 510082 [79:18] [JW]

This important cultural phenomenon has been nicely compiled and collated, and beautifully presented.

French Sacred Music for Choir and Organ David Goode (organ) Eton College Chapel Choir/Ralph Allwood rec. 2009 SIGNUM CLASSICS SIGCD206 [69:04] [RH]

Well worth investigating.

Bernard Hermann A Concert of English Music George Frederick HANDEL Water Music Suite (arr. Harty) Ralph VAUGHAN WILLIAMS Oboe Concerto Edward ELGAR Falstaff Mitchell "Mitch" Miller (oboe) Columbia Broadcasting SO/Bernard Herrmann rec. 1945 PRISTINE AUDIO PASC202 [75:50]

Charles IVES Symphony 2 Robert RUSSELL BENNETT Violin Concerto Bernard HERRMANN Welles Raises Kane Louis Kaufman (violin) London SO, Columbia Broadcasting SO/Bernard Herrmann rec. 1949/56 PRISTINE AUDIO PASC232 [76:44] [RB]

Mono Herrmann recordings open up a lost world. The English collection is to be preferred. The sound of the American one can be testing though the Bennett concerto will have you forgiving everything else.

Hommage à Chopin Jonathan Plowright (piano) rec. 2009 HYPERION CDA67803 [79:40] [CC]

The combination of top-flight artist, superb recording quality and truly imaginative, attractive programming seems quintessentially Hyperion. Yet another winner.
