Memories of Adrian
Adrian was an inspirational
musician and teacher. He made the school
orchestra a major attraction and a "cool"
place to be as teenagers – a great introduction
to music-making for young people. He
expected of us - and achieved - a high
standard, through his enthusiasm, hard
work and dry sense of humour. He pursued
an adventurous repertoire, unusual for
a school orchestra (… "No, we’re
not going to play Water Music, that’s
for ordinary school orchestras"…).
Adrian provided us with the opportunity
to join a distinguished orchestra like
Slaithwaite which, as far as I was concerned,
resulted in the final addiction to orchestral
music-making. His enthusiastic presentation
of music to so many students, players
and audiences has spread the love of
music widely, and I feel privileged
to be one of the many people who has
benefited from knowing our exceptional
friend and teacher, Adrian.
