‘Tomorrow’s Jazz Classics’ is a compilation
of a dozen ballads by as many artists; four titles I would say
are already jazz classics. Sadly, there are no detailed accompanying
notes but there is a complete catalogue of nagel heyer records
and some very interesting names are included.
I was impressed by the immensely talented Eric
Reed’s solo performance on I Love You Lord and agree
with the comments in ‘Time Out – New York’ that said, ‘…one of
the new piano generation’s major thinkers.’
I Can’t Get Started is taken from trombonist
Wycliffe Gordon’s album, ‘The Joyride’ which has already received
great plaudits. He is a fine rhythmic and melodic player and we
will certainly hear more of him in the next few years.
Wave featuring Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison comes
from his ‘There Will Never Be Another You’ album recorded live
in Berlin in 1986. Then, at the age of seventy-one, he still maintained
that laid back and controlled performance for which this great
musician is known.
Overall this is an excellent album with names
old and new and is especially recommended for those periods of
relaxed listening.
