Harry Connick Jr. – piano
Charles "Ned" Goold – tenor
Neal Caine – bass
Arthur Latin II – drums
Harry Connick Jr originally wrote the music for
this album for the 2001 Broadway musical Thou Shalt Not.
This album however was not recorded until February of this year.
Harry Connick Jr is an amazing musical performer, he is a fine
pianist, an impressive composer and arranger and he has the kind
of personality that the earlier jazz giants like Louis Armstrong
and Duke Ellington enjoyed. When Harry is present every concert
is something special; he always gives 150% on each appearance.
He has also assembled a great bunch of sidemen
for this his first small group jazz recordings. I suspect that
Charles Goold plays alto not tenor as the sleeve not implies.
Because all the tunes are new to me, I felt like I needed to hear
the album a number of times to consider their value, but they
are certainly full of interest. I would like to hear the same
band play a set of standards, I can imagine that there would be
some similarities to Brubeck with Desmond. Not that I would expect
harry to slavishly copy anyone, e is too good for that and the
remark is intended as a complement! Neal Caine and Athur Latin
II play their supporting role very well; they are ideal for this
combination.
The sleeve note says that harry intends to make
more small group recordings, I hope he does and he uses the same
musicians.
