Amongst a batch of live recordings from Navras, this one has a special claim
upon the attention of the non-specialist Western listener. It is released
as a 70th birthday tribute for an eminent sitarist of the older generation,
the recording made in 1968 when Jaffer Khan was at his peak. He is an
individualist who produced a unique, personal style, adding techniques and
methods of his own. There is a freshness and constant inventiveness in his
improvisations, which spin marvellous webs and seemingly inexhaustible streams
of sound, with a light touch and an element of fun in his audacious flights
of fancy.
The recorded sound is fine and the notes succinct and useful. I believe you'll
enjoy it, whoever you are!
