JOHN ELLIS.
Music for Organ.
RONALD FROST, at the organ
of St. Ann's Manchester,

For John Ellis, a doctor, music is a spare time activity though an important
one; his compositions include choral and vocal works and organ music. All
the pieces recorded here date from the 1990s. They include voluntaries and
variations based on hymn and carol tunes, a very English-sounding Pastorale,
a major recital work, Allegro and Passacaglia, and two items of lighter organ
music, the Suite in A (Divertissement) and Concert Waltz. The idiom is
approachable if sometimes astringent, the music well made, welcome in recital
and indeed on CD. The experienced Ronald Frost deals most capably with it
and the St. Ann's organ, dating from 1730, sounds well. Recommended.
