BACH
48 Preludes & Fugues, Book 2 BWV 870-893
Robert Levin (harpsichords,
clavichord, organ & fortepiano)

A successful version of the 48, with thoughtful notes by Robert Levin, who
explains his choice of instrument for each one. They are tuned to Werkmeister
III, not an equal temperament, says Levin, 'to give each key an unique acoustic
character! The thirds in Ab & F# are virtually hair-raising'.
It is both instructive and refreshing to hear the familiar preludes and fugues
in this sequence; the changes of instrument refresh your ears and mind!
Accomplished playing and good sound throughout - the clavichord is duly recorded
at an appropriately lower level which should not be interfered with. There
are five played on the organ, and the comprehensive booklet includes the
registration of the organ in Wassenaar and the stops selected for each of
them.
