SEEN AND HEARD INTERNATIONAL

 

The organisers of the Welsh Singers Competition have come up with a commuter ticket deal to give newcomers to operatic singing the chance to see tomorrow’s stars without breaking the bank.

Between 5pm and 6pm tonight all remaining tickets for the Competition at St David’s Hall will be on sale for just £5. You will need to pay in cash at the box office for this offer. Other tickets can still be bought outside these ours at the box office in person, by email www.stdavidshallcardiff.co.uk or calling 029 2087 8444.

This is the first time opera super star Bryn Terfel is first time joining the judging panel to see who has the skill, potential and talent to become Welsh Singers Competition winner 2010.

The winner will return to the St David’s Hall stage to represent Wales in BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2011. Other finalists will each receive a cash prize of £750.

Fresh from his success in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at Wales Millennium Centre, Bryn said, “I am looking forward to seeing and hearing how young singers in Wales are developing. I can remember how important to me winning this competition was. I wish them all the very best of luck for tonight.”

Bryn will announce the winner and Penarth-based soprano Rebecca Evans will present the singer with the trophy given by Welsh Royal Crystal.  Bryn won the Competition in 1988. He went on to represent Wales in BBC Cardiff Singer of the World in 1989 reaching the final alongside Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky. 

Natalya Romaniw

 

The Competition’s last winner Natalya Romaniw from Swansea went on to reach the final of Cardiff Singer of the World Song Prize while two other previous winners Gwyn Hughes Jones and Leah-Marian Jones are this singing with Welsh National Opera. This August past winner Camilla Roberts will be singing with National Dance Company Wales in the Company’s annual Summerdance performance at the New Theatre.

Tonight’s finalists will sing with BBC National Orchestra of Wales. They are Catrin Aur Davies, soprano, aged 31, from Beulah; Rebecca Afonwy-Jones, mezzo soprano, aged 31, from Montgomery; John Pierce, tenor, aged 27, from Holywell and Samuel Evans, baritone, aged 30, from Aberaeron.
