Commentary
The four songs that make up Conversations are more genial
than the songs issued on Iron
Man. Hutch plays only on the first tune, Dolphy’s version of Fat
Waller’s "Jitterbug Waltz". Bobby comps beautifully behind Dolphy's flute
solo and Shaw's trumpet work. His solo is impressive too.
You might think “Matador” would be confrontational, but it isn’t. Instead,
it’s a loping Latin number, reminiscent of Mingus’ Tijuana Moods.
“Alone Together” is a rumbling, ruminative bass clarinet / double-bass
duet.
