Commentary
This isn’t the most impassioned or challenging music you’ve ever
heard. It’s probably not as “important” as some of Dexter’s other records.
But oh, this record sounds soooo good. Dexter’s tone is effortless
and enormous. Bobby’s inspired too. Listen to their work on the beautiful
ballad “Who Can I Turn To,” my pick for the best cut on the album. (It’s
odd to consider that Bobby made this record with Gordon while he was in
Archie Shepp’s “New Thing” group. It certainly proves that Hutcherson
is a tremendously versatile musician.) Gettin’ Around will bring
a smile to your face. Blue Note recently reissued a remastered version
too.
