I'll Be Your Baby Tonight
Kelley Suttenfield - Vocals
Tony Romano - Guitar
Kelley Suttenfield, a New York based singer who features on this disc, along with guitarist Tony Romano, has been compared to Madeleine Peyroux.
She may not be an out-and-out jazz singer (I was reminded of Julie London in that respect) but she can certainly deliver a song. Her clear
articulation and sense of rhythm are apparent and she has chosen her material well for what is her second album (Where Is Love was
released in 2009). For the most part, the tunes are from the popular music canon. Suttenfield brings to them her individual styling.
Sometimes this means a rather languid pace, as with Fly Me to the Moon, People Will Say We're in Love, and on the Gerry Goffin
collaboration with Carole King, One Fine Day. Her husky, slightly off-centre, voice works well on Beautiful Love, on KD Lang's Wash Me Clean, on a Buffy Sainte-Marie number, It's Time for You to Go, and on the aforementioned One Fine Day.
Her partner on this recording, Tony Romano, is a stalwart of the New York City jazz scene. He can turn his hand to Latin music and to pop and
Broadway ditties, too. His contribution overall is impeccable – both stylish and sensitive, important qualities since he bears the entire
responsibility for musical support.
Good songs, then, well delivered and accompanied admirably, make for a satisfying repast.
