This is the Miller Orchestra under the direction of several different leaders, but the essence of the style remains constant, a mixture of exciting swing numbers with smooth ballads, many of which have vocals. To my ears most of the vocals have stood the test of time less well than the instrumentals. This is probably because the end of this era saw the start of the era of the star singers, when the likes of Frank Sinatra. Nat King Cole. Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan changed the concept of big-band vocals for ever!
As you would expect from a Glenn Miller Orchestra, the standard of musicianship is very high and the arrangements are of a very high quality. There can be nothing to say about Cole Porter and Richard Rodgers that has not been said already: they were tunesmiths of a quality that has been seldom heard since their time.
Once again Sounds of Yester Year has restored a lot of fine music that would have been lost to the many Miller fans that still can't get enough of the music today.
