Singing pianist Jamie Cullum hailed Anthony Strong as a "great singer, great pianist", which is perhaps not surprising as Anthony sounds very like Jamie. Strong is a dynamic singer, although his piano-playing strikes me as more distinguished than his vocals. He is backed by a good group which plays imaginative arrangements that make hackneyed songs sound fresh.
Four of the songs are well-worn jazz standards and the fifth track
(labelled unnecessarily as a "bonus track") is an attractive
original by Anthony Strong and Guy Mathers. This is only an extended-play
record (whatever happened to EPs?) lasting 16 minutes, so Anthony
doesn't outstay his welcome. Altogether it's a pleasant but not exceptional
disc.
