Jamie
has worked with a very diverse set of artists
including Brother Jack McDuff, Dr John, Ernie
Watts and Gene Harris, and he was lead guitar
with Blood Sweat & Tears for some three
years.
The
problem with albums that are composed solely
of originals is that on first hearing, there
is nothing familiar. This is not necessarily
a bad thing, because it does cause you to
devote more listening time, but somehow the
task of writing reviews seems more daunting
when there is not a standard to be found.
Jamie
writes very pleasant melodies thankfully,
and that makes the extra listening time worth
while. Undoubtedly one of the stars of this
album for me is Dan Willis on tenor. He is
a major contributor: he has a good warm sound
and ideas a-plenty! Stephan Crump is a fine
bass player and Kenny Werner on piano is good
at accompanying the other musicians and also
an accomplished soloist.
Jamie
himself is a very accomplished guitar player,
capable of playing in many styles. On different
tracks, he plays with several Latin flavours,
as well as demonstrating his ability to swing
in a straight-ahead way.
I
enjoyed this album, but I do wish record producers
would use record sleeves for the purpose they
were intended, to give more information on
the musicians involved.
