This record contains some brilliant writing for a ten piece band by Martial Solal and a performance of outstanding quality by some brilliant musicians, both in their ensemble playing and in their solos. These works must be quite difficult to perform, but the musicians are well up to the task and as one would expect, Solal’s own contributions are significant throughout.

There is just one problem, despite threatening to break out on many occasions, the band is not allowed to swing in the way I am sure it would if it had the chance! To me jazz has to swing or it’s not jazz!

I do not wish to detract however from the compositions or their performance.

The sleeve notes are all in French and despite reference to an English version on the web site nothing exists at present. The label however has some fine CDs in its catalogue.
