This fusion of a Philharmonic Orchestra with a Big Band was not something I looked forward to, having heard previous attempts by other people which failed on all counts, it sounded to me like "mission imposable". I was however very wrong about this record, this is excellent music and great credit must go to composer Bert Joris, who has been entirely successful, in merging these different genre.

The soloists are also excellent throughout and the band swings, it also plays all ensembles very cleanly and precisely. Whilst listening I started to wonder why this fusion had been successful and concluded that the education of musicians is now at the highest standard ever. They are encouraged to look at a much wider musical experience than their predecessors enabling to understand the requirements of more styles in music than ever before. This is also true of the composer who writes so well throughout the four tracks, sometimes the two orchestras play alone and at other times the fuse together to create a pallet of tone colours which is so large that it can never be exhausted.

Bert Joris was commissioned by the Royal Flemish Philharmonic and the Brussels Jazz Orchestra to write this music and the titles "Dangerous Liaisons" and "Between Hope and Despair", would lead us to think that the composer knew the risks! They turned out to be well worth taking.
