Recorded in NYC in August 1997
Bobby short has made
a business out of being in a time warp,
his greatest speciality is the Cole Porter
song book, but anything from that era
is his kind of music. He is a very accomplished
pianist, with a definitive singing style,
not entirely to my taste, but I have great
respect for his musical selection and
presentation and the musicians he uses
on this record are superb. There are not
many instrumental soloists, but those
that are heard are well up to the challenge.
The ensemble playing is crisp accurate
and the tuning very precise. Bandmaster
Loren Schoenberg, has a done a very good
job here, including some of the arrangements.
I always enjoy hearing
the verses that the composers wrote for
these songs, Cole Porter's verse for Just
One of those Things, is a gem as is the
verse for Body & Soul, which I have
never before.
I don't know if the Café
Carlyle is still in existence in Manhattan,
but as I have a son who lives near to
New York, I am going to find out on my
next visit, sounds like my kind of place!
