50
tracks from no less than 48 female vocalists
is on offer from this 2 CD set. This certainly
took me back as Judy Garland sang ‘The Trolley
Song’ which is the earliest song I can ever
remember hearing. Whilst I wouldn’t want a
whole CD of her, or most of the others, (notable
exceptions being Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday,
Anita O’Day, Bessie Smith and Sarah Vaughan,
it is nice to have a compilation like this
with songs from so many famous names and a
good number I’d never heard of before. Stretching
from the 1920s to the 1950s the mix includes
Doris Day, Jo Stafford, Dinah Shore, Lena
Horne, Pearl Bailey, Kay Starr, Peggy Lee,
Jane Russell, Anne Shelton, Jessie Matthews,
Ethel Merman (Boy, what a voice she had!),
Josephine Baker, The Andrews Sisters and Deanna
Durbin. I was struck by how good these singers
were and how they packed each song with real
power. Listen to track 16 on CD1 with Anne
Jamison (Who?) singing ‘Looking for A Boy’
and marvel at her last note – a veritable
opera singer’s high C!
This
is all real nostalgia and there’s nothing
wrong with that!
