Chris Foreman – Hammond B3 organ

The traditional organ trio is at its best when it delivers no-nonsense jazz with hints of the blues and soul. That is exactly what the Deep Blue Organ Trio provides. They have been together since 1992 and the togetherness shows in their cohesive performances. The group is based in Chicago, and this album was recorded there last year at the Green Mill, where the trio appears every Tuesday.

Chris Foreman on the Hammond organ plays some groovy solos as well as driving the trio along with the requisite bass lines on the pedals. He is ably supported by guitarist Bobby Broom and drummer Greg Rockingham (appropriate surname!). They not only play down-home bluesy numbers but sensitive pieces like the bossa nova Once I Loved and the languid Twelfth of Never. They are at their most exciting in The Way You Look Tonight – taken at an unexpectedly fast tempo and filling more than 13 minutes with dynamic jazz, ending with a prolonged, cliff-hanging coda.
