Michel Camillo - Hamburg Steinway D Piano.
Recorded in May 2004 using the Direct
Stream Digital Recording System.
The recording method
used is technically more complicated
than I can understand, but it certainly
produces excellent results, the piano
really sounds like a quality grand should,
even on a personal stereo system.
Michel Camilo hails
from the Dominican Republic, he has
been around the USA jazz scene for two
decades now, usually playing in a trio
and this is his first solo album. In
the sleeve note Michel says the map
for the album was to blend the music
of three different sources, the jazz
repertoire, Brazilian music and his
own compositions. He is no stranger
to Brazilian music having worked with
many Brazilian musicians in the band
of Paquito D’Revera.
Michel has a great
liking for the compositions of George
Gershwin and tracks 3 & 8 were included
because of it. All of the tracks demonstrate,
that this was not just a session where
the pianist went into his standard version
of a particular tune, but gave a great
deal of thought about what to include.
There are four original
compositions, each has a different musical
quality and each is successful in it’s
own way. This is indeed a fine album
as you would expect from a pianist of
Michel Camilo’s calibre. I have just
one little ‘niggle‘, I wish he would
swing a bit more often, he does it so
well!
