Recorded Feb. 2004 in Chicago
Here we have some excellent
musicians, total masters of their instruments
demonstrating to all and sundry how weird
they can be! I can understand that it
might be quite an exciting thing to do,
but I find it hard to understand who would
want to listen to it. What is most surprising
is that as well as being such well schooled
musicians, the programme illustrates their
total understanding of the roots of jazz,
there are a couple of lesser known Ellington
compositions here, pity they forgot that
"It Don’t Mean a Thing If It Ain’t
Got That Swing"/
The good points Jeb Bishop
demonstrates a terrific tone and technique
on the Trombone and it is good to hear
the clarinet in jazz, it is sadly neglected
these days.
How I would love to hear
these guys play a set of standard with
a good pianist included, but I guess they
would regard that as old hat!
