Avishai Cohen is an Israeli born musician who is resident in the USA. He moved there in 1992 after studying classical and jazz piano and bass at the Israeli Music & Arts Academy, he continued his education in St Louis and then at both the New School and Mannes College of Music in New York. He is currently a member of the Chick Corea New Trio and he has worked with Roy Hargrove, Herbie Hancock and Paquito D’Rivera. He has also worked with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic and the Boston Pops Orchestra. He has also made a specialist study of Latin-American music and worked with Pop-Soul artist Alicia Keys.
The band changes on nearly every track of the album and the music is an amalgam of jazz, rock, pop, latin and just about every other kind of music. There can be no doubt about Avishai’s talent and I am certain that he is a very important name for the future. The only problem with this record is to decide just what audience it is aimed at as each track is very different. This would probably work well in live performances, I would certainly go to see them, but people usually play CD’s because they want to hear a certain kind of music to suit their needs at the time.
