In A Mellow Tone

This is the group that took London’s Barbican by storm in 2002 McCoy Tyner, piano – Bobby Hutcherson, vibes – Charnett Moffett, bass and Eric Harland, drums. Here we have four exceptional musicians providing contemporary jazz at its finest and there is no hesitation in saying that this is one of the most exciting CDs I have heard in the last year. They are masters of their craft and there is nothing bland or predictable about their performance.

Seven of the titles were composed by the leader and it would be inappropriate to give any specific preference – each has its own attraction. ‘Contemplation’ typically shows how well the four work together. Whilst Tyner uses sheer impetus to weave his way around the chords and harmonies his co-musicians lay down compelling and clever interchanges. I have always admired Hutcherson’s agility and technique and throughout he is in fine fettle.

If the reception Tyner enjoyed in London last year is any indicator then this recording by the same musicians is assured great success.
