In this increasing market of re-issues and compilations it is a great
pleasure to find a release that fits into this category and yet fills
a gap in what one would consider to be an essential area, particularly
with regards to the new listener to this wonderful music known as
Jazz. This disc, and its companions in the series, will serve as an
excellent educational vehicle, whilst being a most entertaining experience
in its own entity. To describe the contents in the most basic way,
this record is made up of twenty-three performances from some of the
earlier masters of the trombone. Most of the players are legendary,
some are well remembered, some almost forgotten, but all of the artists
featured here made a significant contribution to the development of
the music and to their chosen instrument's evolution.
The liner note is very good in that it gives brief biographical details
for each track - how many times have we bemoaned the lack of such
information recently ? There are also full personnel details, and,
as would be expected from players of this calibre, the supporting
cast is stellar to say the least !
It would be churlish to single out performances as this would surely
only be a reflection of taste as the quality is uniformly high. However,
it is good to see George Chisholm finally achieving long overdue recognition
by his inclusion amongst this illustrious company. On a slightly different
note the numbers from Vic Dickenson, Benny Morton and Dicky Wells
feature outstanding playing from Sidney Bechet, Barney Bigard and
Lester Young respectively.
I recommend this disc unreservedly.
