When you hear these two albums, you will say as I did
"Why haven’t I heard this guy before". Gerard Carelli is not
some young upstart; he is the complete article and worthy of star billing
anywhere. He is an alumnus of the North Texas University 1:00 Big Band.
He honed his trombone playing in Ray Charles’s Band for more than a
year before moving to New York and working in Orchestras for Broadway
Shows and playing other session work. He also worked in touring bands
with Rosemary Clooney, Vic Damone, Johnny Mathis and Mel Torme, before
launching his own singing career. As a Trombone player Gerard would
hold his own in any company, his playing has shades of Teagarden and
Dorsey as well as J J Johnson and Frank Rosolino. The tone is superb
and the improvisational ideas a joy to listen to.
As a singer Gerard has obviously learned from working
with and listening to the best, there is something of Sinatra’s timing,
Torme’s accuracy of pitching and many other influences. The result however
is a unique style of his own, easily identifiable and he is surely destined
to be as famous as Harry Connick JR, or any of the more recent entries
to the singer/interpreters of the great American songbook.
The two albums were made with a gap of seven years,
the earlier in 1994 and the Lucky To Be Me album this year. Both are
excellent, but the new album shows that Gerard is still developing both
as a trombone player and a singer. This gives me the feeling that like
the true ‘greats’ he will continue to develop throughout his career.
Each album includes a Carelli original and both stand
up well in such august company. The trombone playing on Surrey is very
exciting, as are the splendid trumpet improvisations of Rande Sandke.
In everything that he does Gerard Carelli delivers
a feeling of great warmth and sincerity, not only to the listener, but
also to the material he is performing.
I hope we are fortunate enough to have a UK tour soon,
I will be the first to buy tickets!
