As this album of 2 CD's contains 45 tracks, every one of the big swing hits
from the period 1932 to 1946 is included. Playing time totals 2 hours 32
mins.
I would like to congratulate everybody involved at ASV, on the quality of
the sleeve notes, which list all the personnel involved. For me this made
the whole thing so much more enjoyable, I think I would have guessed it was
Lester Young who did the Tenor solo on the 1938 Basie version of Jumping
at the Woodside, but it is nice to know for sure.
Ella Fitzgerald is featured as the singer with the Chick Webb Band on Sing
Me A Swing Song, Ben Webster is on Tenor with the Ellington Band on Take
the A Train
and I could go on and on.
If music from this era is your favourite, this album is very well produced.
My taste is much more with the Big Bands of the 50's, when Stan Kenton was
at the top of his fame and the Bands of Basie and Herman were at their most
creative.
for a well produced
CD.
