Whenever a soundtrack really makes an
impression on me it usually finds its way into my permanent files, otherwise it
is disposed of after I have completed my review. I will admit that James
Horner’s score for the original Zorro film never made my files. But this time
around it will - just. Why? – when much of the thematic material, the hand
clapping, foot-tapping, pipes, castanets and guitar figures all remain as
before? Because Horner has had time to revisit the music, sharpen the rhythm,
and add colour and lustre to the harmonies. There is more bite in the humour,
often attractively wry, more edge to the excitement, more lyricism for the more
romantic moments and more variety between the tracks to hold the ear; although
once more Sony tend to being over-generous in providing nearly 76 minutes of
this type of material
A heroic score lustily performed by a big
orchestra with a large colourful percussion section.
