The most important piece of information one needs to know in appreciating
Ottman's score, is that the director wanted something that "didn't
fit quite right." Knowing that, the effect begins to make sense! Stylistically,
there are clashes in abundance. This is representative of the curious attraction
between Carolyn (Christina Ricci) and a retarded boy named Pumpkin.
"Lofty Goals" throws everything into the pot from the
start, with a breathy female solo (vaguely reminiscent of Rosemary's Baby)
and a backing that transforms from lullaby to a proud and pompous march of sorts.
Harpsichord, harp and all manner of surprise spotlights follow throughout the
score, ending on a truncated reprise of the opening track.
Ottman wrote this in a ridiculously short period of time, which has to
beg the question about inspiration under pressure! Kooky without being completely
inaccessible, this is another terrific showcase for his unpredictably versatile
  talent.
