There was a time when this reviewer watched the approach
of a Goldsmith release date with baited breath. Since about the mid-Nineties
I could really care less for the projects he's undertaken however. I can't
believe the man or his Agent doesn't have the power or good sense to turn
down the endless stream of action movies he does. So here's the latest bag
of familiarity: a high wall of crashing noise punctuating every dramatic explosion,
out-of-date sounding synth effects parping along and several patriotic hymnal
laments.
Either spotlighting how the mighty have fallen or just how
disrespectful the industry is today, the disc features 2 – TWO – appearances
of a soppy song from Yolanda Adams as well as another by Tabitha Fair and
even a painful rendition of "Nessun Dorma". Frankly, I despair
with the material Goldsmith works on today. The end results don't exactly
surprise me in their much of a muchness, but I look forward to the surprise
of something new from the Master of action scoring one of these days.
