Roby Lakatos is descended from János Bihari, the celebrated violinist
and this compilation of movie themes gets the genuine gypsy treatment with
full-blooded interpretations of pieces such as the titular 'As Time Goes By'
from Casablanca(1942) and 'If I were a Rich Man' from Fiddler on the Roof (1971).
The selections that work best though are those where Lakatos takes centre
stage with his expressive violin playing, particularly on the two Morricone
tracks, 'Poverty' and 'Deborah's Theme' from Once Upon a Time in America (1984).
An agreeable collection, performed with aplomb, that should entertain most and will especially
appeal to those who gravitate towards the colour and energy of gypsy music.
