As the show enters its 5th season and all manner of spin-offs
are considered, this is the perfect time for an album to appear. The fact that
it only relates to the first year hints at an intention to begin a library.
That’s good news for fans, and it has to be said that they’re the only ones
likely to be making the purchase.
Fans won’t be disappointed with the selections made. 9 episodes are represented
in suites of varying length. Proportionate to the split in scoring duties over
the year is a majority of work from Joel Goldsmith. His 5 episodes represent
some of the most memorable series entries and feature the popular march for
the Goa’uld. He also arranged David Arnold’s "Overture" from the 1994 Stargate
motion picture. Arnold’s themes crop up every so often and for that he always
seems to get top billing!
Further down the list are Richard Band, Kevin Kiner (who has a nice back-to-back
demonstration of range between "Emancipation" and "The Torment of Tantalus")
and Star Trek stalwart Dennis McCarthy.
It’s all-together a much better representation of the series than the throw
together album put out by Milan in 1997.
