Basil POLEDOURIS
Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles
OST
SILVA AMERICA SSD1130
[45:05]
This album just about qualifies for admission on this site. [We approach film music from the instrumental/orchestral 'classical' side] A good third of its content is made up of inarticulate rap/rock songs; one with some material emulating Lalo Schifrin's Mission Impossible theme. I have to report that most of my team shied away from reviewing this CD. On hearing it, I was not surprised. It does nothing to further the reputation of Basil Poledouris. On the plus side we have his usual penchant for long breathed pastoral/lyrical melodies but we have heard very similar material before - often. This time the music is frequently wrapped up in comic/grotesque synth effects simulating didgeridoos and assorted exotic Australian outback wooden instruments ('Spider/Spider in the Hat') suggesting the cavorting of Dundee and his animal friends and adversaries. There is also the obligatory stealth, menace and chase music. It's all rather weak and pointless as a listening experience. It might appeal to 'pop' fans and youngsters or those who must have a souvenir of the film -- otherwise avoid.
