This is a splendid recording of the enormously popular Carmina Burana with its electrifying opening chorus, 'O Fortuna', made famous by the 'Old Spice' TV advertisement. The work celebrates the worldy pleasures of life in a forthright, often bawdy style. There are 15 numbers on this disc including the lovely soprano solo 'In Trutina' beguilingly sung by Popp, the lusty 'Estuans interius', and the exhilarating children's chorus, 'Tempus est iocundum'. Carl Orff greatly influenced the teaching of elementary music to children throughout the world and energetically promoted his ideas for the combined teaching of music and movement (dance and gymnastics). Schulwerk was conceived for performance by children of varying ability, both vocal and instrumental. Like Carmina Burana, the numbers are strongly rhythmical and melodic and employ a wide range of percussive instruments. The opening 'Rundadinella' is well known from the BBC Amazing what you can learn trail, 'Gassenhauer' (Street Song) is a 'Volkswagen Golf' TV ad. theme, and 'Guten Morgen, Spielmann' (Good Morning, Minstrel) was made famous in the film Badlands. The concert is rounded-off with brief but delightful excerpts from Die Kluge and Der Mond. All these performances were under the overall direction of Orff himself. Heartily recommended.
