NIMBUS NI 1721 [8x 320kbps MP3 CDs: 30:52:00]
Bach fans on a tight budget will be tempted to see this set, equivalent to Nimbus's previously issued 17-volume CD series and priced around £20, as the bargain of a lifetime: 31 hours of the great master's organ music, performed by one of the finest and most indefatigable organists of modern times, for the equivalent of around one-and-a-half full-price CDs! To have all that 'iPod-ready' out of the box must seem especially appealing to the modern music-on-the-move collector. The savings over individual discs are truly massive: this full set is available at the same price as a download of one of the original double-disc volumes - not even the CD version. Those who bought every volume as it came out will be ruing not having been privy to Nimbus's later intentions!
Be that as it may, those who insist on the finest in listening quality are unlikely to be interested in this section of the market, preferring the latest 'studio masters'. Audio heaven indeed, for the few with pristine hearing: although those who have forsaken their hi-fi for listening mobility will likely be aware of the trade-off in audio quality, it must not be forgotten that hearing does tend to deteriorate with age, and what MP3 compression evicts frequently corresponds pretty well with what is lost to time anyway.
Organ music is at any rate impossible to do full justice to outside of its setting; recordings can only begin to approximate the live experience. Yet Nimbus's engineers have done a uniformly sterling job here, all the more remarkable not only for the fact that the recording sessions took place over the course of a decade, but also in consideration of the audio compression subsequently applied. In all likelihood, very few listeners are likely to be able to distinguish these from the original CDs or indeed from competitors' downloads available as lossless FLAC files - Christopher Herrick's broadly concurrent cycle on Hyperion, for example (CDS 44121/36).
As it happens, 'CD quality' audio is a more nebulous concept than might at first be imagined. The shoddiest of recordings can be burnt onto a CD and marketed as "CD quality", a practice not entirely unheard of even today. Instead of taking a lossless master and compressing it for download in MP3 format, some CDs give every indication that the reverse process has been applied, decompressing lossy-grade tracks to convert into "CD quality" - the big problem being, of course, that previously ejected audio material will not suddenly re-materialise.
Bowyer's recordings are divided into 22 Recitals and take in all of Bach's extant organ music, including works that may not have been intended, or intended exclusively, for the organ, as well as several that have been attributed to him - even where these are known to be spurious. The Recitals are organised more for variety than by genre or BWV number. Though tracks are all accurately tagged, with negligible inconsistencies, listeners wishing to play works in other groupings may have to do some renaming or re-tagging of files of their own. Said variety does not extend to what would have been a wilful separation of the items contained in the third part of the Clavier-Übung, the Leipzig Chorales or the Orgel-Büchlein - the latter, for the first time on disc, can be heard from end to end without interruption: around two hours of bliss for the athletic listener!
The Marcussen organ at Odense is an impressive, expressive instrument, enhanced by an easy-going acoustic. The fact that Bowyer plays every single piece on it lends this cycle a special unity of coherence - only marginally at the expense of local character - that multi-instrument sets lack. In any case, Bowyer's amazing talent - always at the service of the composer, and evidenced by a legacy of around 50, almost without exception, memorable CDs for Nimbus (see reviews of his recordings of Brahms, Alkan and Langlais, for example) - ensures that this grand tour of one of the greatest bodies of keyboard music in history will rank alongside the best of those already available, of which there are surprisingly many: the excellent Bach Cantatas website currently lists 60 cycles at various stages of completion!
By way of fine alternative, and considerably cheaper even than Nimbus, James Kibbie, Professor of Organ at the University of Michigan, has also recently recorded the complete Bach organ works on various period instruments in Germany, and a University-funded project has made these available in similarly top-end lossy quality (256kbps, but encoded with AAC rather than MP3) for free here.
The Nimbus notes are extensive, to put it mildly: the three essays by Bowyer, Wilfrid Mellers and Jonathan Baxendale amount to a massive 42,000 words. However, these and a Microsoft Excel-formatted spreadsheet listing all the works by track, title and BWV number require a computer for access - they are included on the final CD. In the meanwhile, the 32-side booklet found in the jewel case provides a very full track listing, brief biographies of performers and a photo and full specification of the Marcussen, albeit with Danish-only stop names and with no indication of Bowyer's registrations. Despite the audio compression, the total required file space remains large at 4.5GB, certainly a consideration for portable listening devices.
