Eduard
Tubin 100
On June 18th,
2005, we will celebrate the 100th birth
anniversary of Eduard Tubin (1905–1982),
Estonian most eminent composer. Above
all Tubin is a symphonist; the back-bone
of his music is the ten Symphonies that
have an important place in the 20th
century European music. His symphonies
are characterized by inner depth, virtuosity
and individual style. The same can be
said about his instrumental concerts
and operas "Barbara von Tisenhusen",
"The Parson of Reigi" and
ballet "Kratt".
Although half of his
life Tubin lived in Sweden, in his heart
he remained above all an Estonian composer
who developed in his music the best
traditions of Estonian classical music
compounding together the intonation
of Estonian folk music and modern musical
means of expression.
To celebrate Eduard
Tubin’s 100th birth
anniversary many concerts and activities
will take place. Organised jointly by
Eduard Tubin Society and Eesti Kontsert
the most comprehensive would be the
international festival where different
conductors and orchestras will perform
all his 1 0 s y m p h o n i e s.
This would be an attempt to give a complete
cyclic overview on Tubin as a symphonist.
This event would be a unique in scope
in the whole Estonian music history.
Introducing the music by Edurad Tubin
in the whole world services by maestro
Neeme Järvi have been immense.
He has recorded the greater part of
Tubin’s symphonic music (BIS) and has
deserved the highest international acknowledgement.
His participation in the Tubin Festival
with Tubin’s greatest work – Symphony
No. 6 – will hopefully be one of the
high peaks of this festival. Also Estonian
National Symphony Orchestra ERSO and
conductor Arvo Volmer have recorded
all symphonies by Tubin (Alba) and he
will also conduct the new premier of
the opera "Barbara von Tisenhusen"
at the National Opera "Estonia".
The opera has been recorded by conductor
Peeter Lilje (Ondine).
We have inherited from
Eduard Tubin an amazingly rich and versatile
music that belongs to the Estonian music
gold reserve. His music expresses in
its individual way our people’s soul
and its originality and is Estonian
national pride. Year by year the music
by Tubin has received growing understanding
and notice not only in his homeland
but also in the whole world. Hopefully
Tubin’s jubilee celebrations will forward
exploring the values in his music and
describing the place Edurad Tubin takes
both in his time and in our time.
