What will companies
do next to sell their recordings? Here
is quite a novel idea of presenting
music written as contemporaneous to
an artist, in this case Pieter Bruegel
(1525/30-1569). As can be seen, all
these pieces have been issued previously.
They have been gathered together under
the unifying banner of Bruegel being
items relevant to his milieu. To deal
but briefly with the musical aspect,
everything is well performed and presented,
and makes very pleasant listening if
you like renaissance period pieces.
I would not suggest listening through
for an hour and a quarter. Instead I
suggest you to dip in and enjoy a few
extracts at a time; much more enjoyable.
The alternative for the renaissance
enthusiast is to play this as background
music, possibly with other aficionados
at a dinner party (complete with serving
wenches and dancers?). Seriously, the
selection is well varied and changes
sufficiently from one item to the next
so as not to become boring.
So to the art aspect;
I must admit that the amount I know
about art and artists would leave ample
room if written on the back of a CD.
That said, I certainly recognised several
of the paintings illustrated in the
booklet, notably "The Peasant Dance"
and "The Tower of Babel".
The booklet is informative about Bruegels
life and times and has several other
illustrations of his paintings, together
with a useful chronology of events during
his lifetime, relating these to the
Franco-Flemish school of musical composition.
Added to this is a basic pen portrait
of the composers illustrated on the
disc, together with the text and English
translation of the choral and vocal
items - an admirable presentation, particularly
for only ฃ5; other companies, please
take note.
I derived a great deal
of pleasure from this disc. It may possibly
be better to buy the individual CDs,
but for anyone wanting to explore this
period of great change in musical form
this cross-section gives a good insight.
